Sol Niger Within by Fredrik Thordendahl's Special Defects. Albeit I -do- consider myself something of a Meshuggah fan.
Mark Hollis' all-acoustic album from '97 almost transcends those last two Talk Talks.
Fabio Zuffanti's La Quarta Vittima from 2014 is in my honest opinion a finer work than anything that ol' dog has done in any other capacity.
Also, I liked David Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name more than any CSN(Y), and preferred Dean Martin without Sinatra and for Donny Osmond to not join Motörhead.

I've got most of Peter Murphy's solo work and I've seen him live several times. However, I don't like any Bauhaus music and I've passed on PM live releases where he just plays Bauhaus material.
I have all of Kevin Moore's solo work - Chroma Key is especially good - but the only Dream Theater album I like (and own) is Train Of Thought.

Don't know if this counts, but I think there's a good argument that Ben Folds solo output is better than Ben Folds Five.
The vocalist from Tin Machine has a number of solo albums that are better than the albums that particular band released.
I like Colin Newman's Not To better than anything I've heard by Wire.

I've grown to really love Bruce Soord's Luminesence album but have but have yet to hear any Pineapple Thief album that I like - apart from one song here and there.
Hasse Bruniusson's Flying Food Circus... like it more than any Flower Kings I've heard.

Michael Bundt Just Landed Cosmic Kid over Nine Days Wonder, (do like some Nine Days Wonder tho')
Ron Thal Adventures of Bumblefoot over what he did with Guns and Roses
JJ Burnel Euroman Cometh over most, (but maybe not all) Stranglers albums
Richie Kotzen Electric Joy or his first album over Poison or Winery Dogs
First Tolonen album over Tasavallan Presidentii (but haven't heard all the TP stuff)

I have been racking my brain trying to think of one, and I finally did. I like Steve Lukather’s “Candyman” album start to finish better than any Toto album start to finish.
