I suppose it was inevitable

It's funny how time changes everything; when Portnoy left Dream Theater, he was too involved with Transatlantic and Neal Morse band. TA appears to have folded and NMB is on hiatus so Portnoy now has a lot more time to rejoin his old band. Feel bad for Mike Mangini but it's all about the politics of the business.
And don't forget the A7X debacle at the time too- tho the album MP is on kicks ass.

Now they just need to find a replacement for LaBrie.
Wow!

Although I don't pay super close attention to all things DT I have to admit I definitely didn't see that coming.
Interesting timing....just ten days or so from the announcement of Mike Mangini releasing his first solo album, due in November, with Tony Dickinson (TSO) on bass, Ivan Keller (Jelusick) on guitar, Gus G. (Firewind, Ozzy) on lead guitar and former Evanescence guitarist Jen Majura on vocals.:
Mangini was let go. No different than when they let Derek go and got Jordan.
KevMoore and Mike resigned.

When they split, Mike wanted to take a break. Not burn all bridges.

I'm probably in the minority but I started liking them more when Portnoy left so it will be interesting to hear what comes next.
Now even less reason to listen to them...
I'm now curious.
Not at all. In fact, other than the first Transatlantic album and tour, I don't even follow any of the bands he takes part in. Used to be quite a big fan of the band, Portnoy included. But over the years my interest an admiration dropped to just a morbid curiosity with Mangini on board. Im interested in seeing where Mangini goes now!
Talk about A Dramatic Turn Of Events! I'm looking forward to see what Dream Theater comes up with now the Mike Portnoy is back on board.
