Jethro Tull - The Prog Years Tour 2020

Yet another new tour that is nearly a year away!

Ian Anderson and the Jethro Tull band have announced that they will return to the road with The Prog Years Tour 2020 with 11 dates across the UK in September and October.


This tour will draw heavily on material from Jethro Tull’s more ‘prog’ albums, much of it focussing on the early ‘heavy hitters’ of the Tull catalogue, classic albums including Stand Up, Benefit, Aqualung, Thick As A Brick, Passion Play and even a touch of Thick As A Brick 2 from 2012.

From the outset, Tull’s frontman Ian Anderson created the distinctive persona of the tousled flute-playing minstrel, balanced on one leg and playing music with an historical slant. Jethro Tull continues to hold a unique place in the hearts of progressive music fans and these albums are the focus of that passion.

Ian Anderson will be accompanied by Tull band musicians David Goodier (bass), John O’Hara (keyboards), guitarist Joe Parrish and Scott Hammond on drums. The show will be enhanced by full scale video projection.

They actually have a really bizarre itinerary posted, unless they plan to fill in more dates: the Prog Years "Tour" starts with two shows in Spain at the end of February, then three shows in Finland in mid-March, and three shows in Russia at the end of April. Then in the summer, five dates in Germany not billed as Prog Years, spread out over five weeks! Then this UK tour.

Ian must really be working on his frequent flier miles.

I can only speak for myself of course, but I do think it usually comes from a place of love.

I would not group Stand Up & Benefit in the Prog era. I would think Minstrel fits this more (and maybe even war child). I always saw Stand Up & Benefit as the bluesy era and having more in common with Too Old.

My breaking point was a concert in Toronto with Procol Harum backing up Jethro Tull. Booker's vocals were strong and crystal clear. As you say, Ian croaked. That was about 10 years ago. I swore never again. ian's vocal in the past were sublime and JT were amongst the best prog shows I witnessed. I just can't understand how people continue to see Ian sing, when he can't.

Nope. Not going to one of Ian’s shows that doesn’t include a different singer. Saw him try and do it this past summer and it was brutal. The tours with Ryan singing were outstanding but this last one was dreadful.

It is pretty painful. I stopped after 2008. Thought about every tour that's come around since, but I just didn't see the point. Here's where we are at in 2019, BTW. Skip to about 2:35.

I can't even watch....Ian will always be one of my absolute fav musicians ever, period, so it's too painful to see where he is currently. I wish he would do a solely instrumental thing at this point, but I guess he must follow his own court-jester muse, eh?

I wonder why some guys just can't walk away. I saw a commercial last night for the "Beach Boys" at a small local casino. There's Mike Love shuffling around with some backup band. He's 78 and has a substantial fortune if the Internet is to be believed. WTAF, do you claim you love the road so much you would play a dinky reservation casino in North Dakota in November! And the same with Ian. FFS, enjoy your golden years. My wife is this ridiculous James Taylor and he has played the same goddamn set for the past decade. Shut it down already, you're going through the motions.

To me there's two ways to do it. Do like Rush and end it with a monster album/tour, going out making a statement. Do it like Robert Fripp and Robert Plant, find a new way to play old music or just keep breaking new stylistic ground.

Yikes! Too bad, the band sounds pretty darn good. What is he thinking? Not even sure what's going on here or if this is purely a physical issue. He doesn't seem to be able to breath or project at all, just totally tightened-up here. Regardless, he should just hire a great young singer and put on a great show. Jeez.
