Love this album, just about as much as Machine Head, though it still trails my favorites studio efforts from the MkII line-up, which are In Rock (#1) and Fireball (#2). Gillan and Blackmore were already fed up with each other by this point sadly.
Either to create the tinny, more clavichord-esque sound of the piano (which actually becomes rather reminiscent of an early pianoforte) or just to achieve that absolute sequencer-like precision at those speeds in the days before you could sequence a sound like that. Likely, both.
