Thread: Prog Love Songs?

    Prog Love Songs?

feel like this may have come up before so sorry if I am repeating territory but wasn't able to find something on a quick search.

was wondering what peoples favorite prog love songs were I'll use the term prog here lightly knowing that sometimes a love song isn't really prog style but maybe a love song by a prog group that you like a lot(in other words lets avoid is it prog arguments).

    I'll throw mine out there.

Yes has plenty of good ones I tend to like Onward the best of the bunch.

    how about you?

I always thought "Supper's Ready" was pretty romantic.
I'm holding out for the Wilson-mixed 5.1 super-duper walletbuster special anniversary extra adjectives edition.

Of course, what constitutes a love song is subjective too.

I like Marillion's "Whatever Is Wrong With You."

La Rossa by Van der Graaf Generator is the first love themed prog song that comes to my mind, although it's more of a lust song. I'm sure there are more romantic and subtle ones out there.

Sadly, love songs in this genre are much too rare, but the best of them are stunning:

    "Autumn" by the Strawbs
"Nights in White Satin" by the Moody Blues.

I also like the last four minutes of Yes's Tales from Topographic Oceans and "Your Own Special Way" by Genesis. And I suppose "Lamplight Symphony" by Kansas is kind of a love song, too; "Turn of the Century" by Yes has a similar theme.

Does Magma's "Dondai (To An Eternal Love)" count?

FZ's "Village of the Sun" is a love song in a way, not to a person but to a place near where Frank grew up, and where many of his early friends came from.

Marillion - Pour My Love, kinda their stab at a Simply Red style song. My wife likes it and she has no truck with prog.

Yes - In The Presence Of

Just good friends is NOT a love song. It appears to be but is in fact about his relationship with the music industry.

those are 2 of the best in my book!
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

Strong deja vu with this thread, although like the OP I can't find a previous one. 'Turn of the Century' sparked a memory, but searching on that doesn't help either.

Jethro Tull must have a couple, surely.

Ladies of the Road? Maybe more lust than love.

    Afterglow.

    “follow you follow me”, anyone?

Well, though I suppose Joe Jackson wouldn't be considered prog, but I still want to mention Be my number two. Perhaps a bit quirky lyric-wise, but I love the arrangement, with the instrumental ending with piano, sax and violin and some percussion-like drums. (I mean, drums aren't playing rhythm, but add something.)

    How about these:

"From The Beginning" - Emerson, Lake & Palmer
"Still...You Turn Me On" - Emerson, Lake & Palmer
    "Sweetness" - Yes
    "Yesterday & Today" - Yes
    "More Fool Me" - Genesis

Yes has had a few that I used to get my wife used to prog:

    "Where Will You Be?"
    "Hearts"
    "Turn of the Century"
    "Onward"

"Ghost of a Chance" from Rush was always a favorite.
