I think they do something similar each year. I would imagine that some of the other acts will be on the East coast somewhere in the same timeframe.
Not saying it would be cheaper, but might allow some flexibility in scheduling.
Carla Bley is playing in DC on the Friday of Big Ears. THAT doesn't help!

    Looked at my schedule.
I am conflicted. Why must I compromise?

Not thrilled with the Nils Frahm and Makaya McCraven conflict. Other than that schedule is working out ok. Thankful Harold Budd is playing multiple sets.

    Clarice Jensen & Jonathan Turner

    Friday
    David Torn
    Larry Grenadier
    Mary Halvorson's Code Girl
    Theo Bleckmann
    The Comet Is Coming
    Kim Kashkashian
    Spiritualized
    Absint
    ICE plays Anna Thorvaldsdottir
    Fire!

    Saturday
    Columbia Icefield
    KTL
    The Messthetics
    Carla Bley Trio

Sadly, I'm leaving on Sunday because I didn't want to miss Monday at work, so I will not get to see Ronin!! :-(

But all else will work out fine.

The last time I drove down on Thursday I was so burned out. I got there in time, but the evening was tough towards the end.

    I bet

I'm flying in. It's too far for me to want to drive and I don't want to have to worry about my car.

    BTW, Ian,

I just saw Columbia Icefield in DC last week:

It was very very good and also pretty damn weird. Jazz musicians NOT playing jazz. Came across more like contemporary composition and almost sound-design like at times.

If you're in the mood for it, it's pretty great and might make your list of must-sees. John may feel the same way if he has time.

and Fire! is in DC on 3/26, so I will probably see them then.....

I flew the last couple of years, mostly because my 20yr old car was not suitable for the excursion.
The first time my muffler fell off outside of Bristol.
This year a new car will get me there in relative comfort for a few hundred dollars less .
The non-stop flight from National is a treat though. I got home on Monday by 10:30am.
The drive back Monday is going to be tough.

    Hello Steve!.
"Columbia Icefield" ... Nate Wooley´s new quartet? ... WoW!; last night I was recommending it at the Jazz discussion thread: it´s a great effort as "Argonautica" IMO!.

    Finally,
I wish you all an excellent week, take care, have a good time and we'll wait for your comments!!.

Apparently I already agreed with you, as they were already on my weekend itinerary

Good! I think you'll like it. Definitely not jazz as in 'swing'.

Also - if you want to see him and don't want to do it by missing someone else at Big Ears, Carl Stone will be at Rhizome 3/17....

I saw that he was coming! If I'm not acting as DD for a group of Irish-friendly folks, I might just make it up to Rhizome for that too

I wish they'd make a DVD of some of this music. They could probably come up with two or three DVDs worth this year.
