For the last three qualification campaign (WC & EC), they've had easy groups which they often came out easily first, but never really a really big opponent (outside "friendly matches") with big stakes...
The only biggie was against Italy at the previous EC (their opening match of the tournament) and they lost it big time.
Comon , you can not really use this excuse anymore for the Belgium squad. This team has been playing together for years now and individually they all play for big clubs in Europe. Plenty of experience. If this golden generation does not deliver now, they never will.

This sounds like an England quote from the last 20 years.

    Not an excuse at all.

I totally agree that if they don't manage at least a semi this time, they'll never get it... That's why I'm not optimistic.

LOL that's a bit pessimistic! Look at Spain...went from perennial bridesmaids to World and European champions not that long ago.

If you enjoy the pessimism however, just start supporting Scotland...

Belgium hammer Costa Rica 4-1 - Lukaku scores 2 - looking at their squad they have got to be in with a chance of going all the way - although Brazil have been getting better with every game these last few weeks.
In keeping with my Glasgow Celtic sub-plot - one Celtic player on each side yesterday Boyata for Belgium and Gamboa for CR.

CR's recent friendlies are anything less than impressive... They only managed to beat Scotla,d and N Ireland... they lost all the other matches. But unlike Belgium, they've played all of their matches on the road (except for one), while the Red Devils stayed home.

But yeah, the stats show the Belgians dominated head & toes... and rebounded from a 0-1 beginning and also with a (maybe valid) goal that got cancelled

I tend to agree, their logic is that very few non-seeded team have won the WC and Spain weren't seeded missing out by one spot. BUT FIFA have just changes their ranking system as it was open to manipulation, friendly matches scored less points in the ranking so some teams stopped playing friendlies to protect their ranking whereas teams like England, Italy & Spain played lots of friendlies and took the hit. That's how Poland are seeded this time and Switzerland were last time.

The new systems addresses this imbalance and Spain would have been the third seed based on the new system (England would be 7th)

    Current ranking and new ranking.
    1. Germany (2)
    2. Brazil (1)
    3. Belgium (8)
    4. Portugal (6)
    5. Argentina (5)
    6. Switzerland (14)
    7. France (4)
    8. Poland (19)
    9. Chile (15)
    10. Spain (3)
    11. Peru (10)
    12. Denmark (16)
    13. England (7)
    14. Uruguay (12)
    15. Mexico (18)
    16. Colombia (9)
    17. Netherlands (11)
    18. Wales (22)
    19. Italy (13)

USA win the right to host the 2026 World Cup along with their great, great neighbours Canada and Mexico - I think you're all getting on brilliantly at the moment, is that right?

just saw that... and that's totally absurd (and suicidal)

that president should be shot (he's most likely a pro-Franco enthusiast)

By that time, there will be 48 countries qualified (up from the 32 as of now)

PLEASE don't play any games in and around Boston.

We were able to forestall the threat of hosting the Olympics; let's hope we can prevent this as well.

Why not, if you don't mind me asking? The Red Sox and Yankees are coming to the UK for a series (next year I think?) and I can't wait. Having a major international sporting event in your city is a blast!

A few games at Foxboro would be fun, a lot less aggro than a whole Olympics.
