    Facebook & Cambridge Analytica

I'm absolutely not starting this thread to say "I told you so", but since I've never been on FB, despite both my kids and many on this site thinking I'm missing out and trying to convince me (to no avail I assure you & that won't ever change) to join. I'm just concerned and wondering, for my kids & their families, whether there are those concerned enough to walk away from FB.

I haven't talked to any of my family yet about this, but am I overreacting or not?

I also refuse to be on Facebook as I don't think a single corporation should have control over such a vast social media network as well as not wishing to be a "product" rather than a client and having my data used for nefarious purposes as we have unfortunately seen recently. Obviously this is a personal decision. Here's an interesting article in the NYT on people leaving FB:

The way I look at it, they can only use the data that you provide to them, and as such, I don't offer much. I try to stay pretty private on the Internet.

Well since the topic has been brought up, I was wondering this morning what "personnel information" everyone is so upset about being disclosed. I mean you don't provide bank accounts or social security #'s, right? I'm another who doesn't use social media, I have a phone, and a finite number of folks I need to communicate with. So is the info everyone is going crazy about just shit they posted? And if so are these folks, who are undoubtably smarter than I about the internet, really surprised that info is out there for grabs?

Considering all I use FB for is musical discussion they probably know exactly what I like now and should get off their nosey butts and buy me some CDs!

The trick is to find something interesting to USE FB for, not sit around and let it use you.

FB and almost all other social media platforms are way too a) intrusive b) time wasting c) personal and d) insecure for me to ever consider joining. I figure I haven't missed much. "Facebook Friends" aren't like real friends anyway.

Hell, I get all the time wastin' a guy could want right here!

Besides, I wouldn't want to join any club whose standards were low enough to allow me to join.

Once it's out there, it's ALWAYS out there. No way to pull it back.

    1. Make an anonymous gmail mr.bogus@gmail.com
    2. Make a FB account with a name that relates to your gmail
    3. Fill the FB account info about you with bogus data (Born in Swakopmund, Namibia, 101 years ago)
    4. Dont tell anybody who you really are (Because someone, one day, will blow it)
    5. Dont befriend people you know (unethical)
    6. Use another browser for your regular surfing (so that FB doesnt pickup your habits and interest)
    7. Be a nice person

And then you can join tons of fora, invent new fora, get serious info about your interest, get bullshit funny laughs, watch cute kittens, girafs and dogs, post pictures of your meals...

Nothing is "anonymous" on the i-net unless you're adept at bouncing servers through a series of VPNs.

The important thing to know about this whole kerfuffel is that Cambridge is a ripe pimple in a forest of blackheads.
Every "fun Facebook quiz", app or what have you does essentially the same thing as the app in question.
When you agree to allow the app, it mines Your data ( at the very least ) and potentially the data of those linked to you.
In this case at least some of the end users of the data are known.
In most cases the company harvesting the data is obscured, and if the app users are lucky, they will just receive targeted ads.
But count on the fact that there are many Big Data startups out there that are spending venture capital money to buy data and try to make money or generate some kind of outcome that they can sell.

Maybe Facebook was a place to connect with friends, at some time in the past.
The extra tin foil hats I felt that I had to wear to be a 'safe' Facebook user got to be too uncomfortable and I deleted my account for the new year.

True dat, Markwoll. I run Firefox with NoScript, which blocks all redirects and data mining, and some/most websites have DOZENS of hidden hooks.

Nobody should act surprised. It's not like this wasn't well known for over a decade.

And nobody should expect that they're talking to real people, or the people they purport to be, or that anything they say is true.

Unless you're completely off the grid, your anonymity is nonexistent.

Regretfully, I had no choice but to create a FB account. I need one for my business and you cannot create a business one without first having a personal one.

I do think social media needs to be regulated like any other media outlet.

This will be quite the naïve post, so apologies (I guess really just to myself) in advance:

I'm not very plugged in on anything techy so I'm sure I could find this elsewhere, but I really dont' awnt to dig through all the stuff I won't understand just to get a clear answer. My question is, what data exactly was stolen? Was it just for people who agreed to use this 'apps' or whatevers that allowed CA to mine the data? What did CA do with this information?

Thanks for your time and patience.

As I understand it, no data was stolen at all. What happened was, Facebook lent out 50 million user profiles to a Cambridge professor for his research. He then SOLD the data to a British firm which then mined the data and used it to create targeted ads favoring Donald Trump and disparaging Hillary Clinton.

Ahh I see. Interesting. Thanks. I've longed disliked the targeted ad bullshit but it seems to be ever present on the internets.

Do you mean there are Bots in all those CTTE FB groups, arguing over whether or not Riverside is a headline-quality band?

Back in the early days of FB I used to deactivate my account for long periods. Can you still deactivate your account, as opposed to deleting it?

I have been, am now, and will be continue to be blissfully ignorant of all this 21st century attempt at proving George Orwell prescient.

I'm glad I started a thread that has helped me and the Hobo at least understand the rudiments of this shite.
