Iron Butterfly's first 3 albums (+ live) were quite psychedelic.

I wasn't trying to imply that The Savage Resurrection were in any way imaginative - they surely weren't. One of several bands attempting to follow heel on the immense power of Blue Cheer, The Savage R. were simply an example of an average juvenile 'nobody' of an act doing "Eastern tinged jams". In essence they were more of a vintage hard rock group than a psychedelic one.

But off-the-hat examples of exceedingly imaginative psych songwriting from the US would be the following:

    (Listen to the string arrangement):

    (Harmonies):

    (Force):
"Improvisation is not an excuse for musical laziness" - Fred Frith
"[...] things that we never dreamed of doing in Crimson or in any band that I've been in," - Tony Levin speaking of SGM

If it isn't Krautrock, it's krap.

Thanks, quite right, it was rec 1968 a year after USA (corrected above post). I happen to think it an interesting album, it definitely enjoys a great cult status and has had several reissues and a lasting legacy. For me "You Can't Ever Come Down" is a classic track. Originals are highly prized by collectors.

"Because The American Metaphysical Circus offered a markedly different sound in its intense horn and woodwind arrangements and even more novel content than on the earlier The United States of America release, many fans of the earlier record are not as enchanted with the latter, and vice versa."
