A pirated copy of an official release, ie a knockoff, is illegal theft. You're literally buying a copy of an officially released product from a 'pirate' and not paying the band/record co for its product.

A bootleg of a live recording that has not been officially released by the band, ie the thing that tape traders do etc, does not deprive the band/record co of income, so you're not stealing a copyright protected item of merchandise.
