Procol Harum "Still There'll Be More: An Anthology 1967-2017" 5CD/3DVD box set (Esoteric UK)

Esoteric Recordings are proud to announce the release of an official limited edition super deluxe boxed set celebrating fifty years of the legendary Procol Harum; Still There’ll Be More. This eight disc set comprises five CDs and three DVDs, of which the first three discs draw upon the key tracks from Procol Harum’s illustrious career. Disc four features the band’s legendary concert at the Hollywood Bowl on 21 September 1973 (with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the Roger Wagner Chorale), whilst disc five features a previously unreleased concert at the Bournemouth Winter Gardens on 17 March 1976.

Of the DVD content, (NTSC – Region Free) which features over three and a half hours of footage, mostly previously unreleased, disc six begins with a performance of A Whiter Shade of Pale on the BBC TV show Top of the Pops from December 1967 before moving to the archives of the German Beat Club series. All of the band’s surviving performances for the show are here, including the entire un-broadcast raw video footage of the band’s Beat Club Workshop studio concert from 1971, shorn of the visual gimmickry of the actual broadcast, revealing the pure performance on DVD for the first time. Disc seven features the entire sixty-five minute recording session of a performance for the German Musikladen series in October 1973, most of which was never shown on television. Disc eight features more BBC TV performances, including a rendition of Pandora’s Box from Top of the Pops in September 1975 and the band’s set for the Sight and Sound In Concert series in March 1977.

This lavish re-mastered set also features a sixty-eight page hard backed book with an essay by Patrick Humphries and a lengthy in depth commentary on the performances featured by respected Procol Harum authority Roland Clare. The book also includes many previously unseen photographs and memorabilia from Gary Brooker’s private collection. Still There’ll Be More also includes a 60cm x 40 cm reproduction poster from a Procol Harum concert (featuring support from Vivian Stanshall) in 1976.

Still There’ll Be More is the most elaborate celebration of Procol Harum’s music released to date and this deluxe boxed set is a fine tribute to fifty years of one of Britain’s greatest bands.

Much as I love me some Procol Harum, this box sounds like just a bit more than I need.

Auto-buy. I've watched some of those performances on YouTube, and they are great. These should be even better, with remastering, proper production and the removal of a lot of the Beat Club visual gimmicks. This set is worth getting for those alone. So even though this will be the third time I own a lot of the studio recordings, so what... Two new audio concerts as well. Very exciting.

Kudos to the producers for not filling up the DVDs with all the already-released material from the new millennium.

Damn. Just as I was telling myself to go easy on the box sets this year.

only disc (the first DVD) might be of some interest to me, but even then, I fear the "Complete recording session for “Beat Club Workshop” – Radio Bremen German TV - 27th December 1971" sounds like it's the PH MkII line-up (post-Trower)
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

That's the part of the video content that has been widely available on DVD already (most of it, anyway). Yes, it's the post-Trower lineup with Dave Ball.

This looks very impressive - but for the most hard core fans.

I really like the look of this box, which is odd considering, so far, I've only really liked their debut. I've heard bits and pieces from other albums, but nothing's clicked yet. I guess I'm just a sucker for a good box set!

I encourage you to explore their catalog some more. I only "discovered" them about six years ago when they opened for Yes. Their second and third albums are (IMHO, of course) par excellence. I've sworn off extravagant music purchases this year, but I might have to make an exception for this box set.

I'll certainly go back to those at some point soon. They can't be any worse than the Van Der Graaf Generator album I experimented with this afternoon!

Wow, The only issue I have with this is that I appreciate a lot of PH deep tracks and this collection kind of skips over them. ANy idea what the cost will be on this?

    did you get a visual?
Coz from the track listings on the discs; it doesn't look like the original albums will be respected... and I kind of expect that, both on the tracks available and the full artwork.

    =============

However I do encourage you to explore more, at least until Robin Trower left the band (the end of what I call PH Mk1), even if all their albums have hits and misses...
and you can safely go the Edmonton Symphonic orchestra album as well, despite it being +/- the start of their Mk2 era...

After that, I'm not a fan, though I'll be in a minority.
