This is one of the few times I've heard Jon Batiste at a loss for a piano lick - particularly surprising, because Stephen was throwing out straight line after straight line, and seemed to be expecting Jon to run with it.

Stephen can, in fact, sing. Not sure if it's still up, but I've seen him on YouTube in a production of Sondheim's Company, playing a supporting role. And Sondheim can be hard to sing.

I knew Stephen was a prog fan more than a decade ago when Rush was on the Colbert Report.

    Really?

I like The Cars, but come on. How many times are you gonna bring this up? We get it.

Not a bad cover, considering the staff graphic artist had maybe two hours
to build it from a Stephen Colbert file photo, some clip art & a cool font.

I still wish Jon Batiste had been able to play something appropriate. Just faked it if nothing else, although "South Side of the Sky" would have been perfect. However, even though the guy seems to have an encyclopedic knowledge of jazz, R&B, and pop, I guess there's music he doesn't know all that much about.

Sure sign that it's prog: someone on this board complaining about what they didn't do.

Wow. In what context? I know Dennis Miller has mentioned VdGG over the years, at least once on his old TV show and a few times on his radio show, but it was always sort of derogatory (i.e. if the house band played something a little far out, "What's that, VdGG?")

During that episode, he asked the band whether they ever wrote a song so long that by the end of it they were getting influenced by themselves.

Colbert also did a trio number on his old show with Michael Stipe and Brian Eno (no YouTube - Comedy Central gets pretty proprietary). There was also a Christmas trio with Stipe, Colbert, and Mandy Patinkin. He doesn't do as much musical stuff as he did on the old show which is a shame.

And remember, at the end of the episode, Rush played Tom Sawyer. Stephen put on his nightcap and went to sleep. In the beginning of the next day's episode, Stephen woke up and they were still playing Tom Sawyer.

That's a relief! If that living POS was a VDGG fan I'd have to reevaluate my affinity for VDGG altogether...

I've never personally seen/heard the references from Miller but I've heard from various people (including here on PE) about it so I'm pretty sure it happened. I personally find both DM and Colbert to be pretty unfunny but I'd try to get either on record if I were going to write another VdGG book.
