Jethro Tull without Martin Barre: Where's the justice?

All day long I've heard plugs for JT playing at the Beacon Theater in NY., without the magnificent Martin Barre. The man who most wants to play Tull's music after Ian Anderson. Probably more than Ian, as old Cod Piece was too caught up in his solos career until the dollar signs got too big and he could no longer ignore the Tull brand label. Where's the justice?

It's a free country. "Justice" is however you define it.

The justice is Ian's voice is toast and Martin seems to be really happy playing guitar driven versions of Tull tunes with his own (excellent) band. They are one heck of a unit. So even if he was with Tull you'd be getting a shadow of what they once were. Better to move on anyway. Some things aren't meant to last forever. The window of opportunity closed awhile ago for "Tull". Tull is basically a tribute band with a marginal singer at this point anyway.

    Here's a whole show too-

He didn't sound that spirited in Tull for a couple decades....

Sean, if the unassuming Mr. Barre was not one of the nicest people to ever to strap on a guitar and play in a British rock band, I would agree with you. Anyone who's ever met and conversed with Barre would say the same. His loyalty and good nature toward Anderson and Tull deserved better than what Anderson dealt to him.

Did Barre make any comments about having a problem carrying on as Jethro Tull in 1980 when Evan, Barlow and Palmer left? Maybe long ago John Evan also wondered where's the justice?

Martin is a gentleman's gentleman (he surely wouldn't have run into Jack Dawson on the Titanic). I have read (or imagined) he was tired of playing the same 20 or so songs with Ian out of a catalog of 300, he also cast aspersions on Ian's voice although in a very gentle manner. Being the longest serving member in Tull besides Ian and getting the hit the road phone call from management has left him scarred, I doubt there's enough $ in the world for him to go crawling back, not that Ian would ever ask.

Justice is blind, and apparently in the case of Anderson's vocal croak, also deaf.

Are we still talking about this? Wow - let's beat the horse until its dust then beat it some more.

Justice? How about thanking and/or celebrating Ian for writing 20+ albums of amazing music, endless touring for decades, and leaving it at that? Nah, let's criticize him instead, it makes us feel better.

Live Tull/Ian is barely a former shell of what it used to be - an amazing live act - and Martin/no Martin isn't gonna have any impact whatsoever.
If it isn't Krautrock, it's krap.

That makes you what you are" - Ian Anderson

Yes, we're still talking about this because a reformed Tull minus Barre has much more impact that Anderson touring solo without him. If Barre was not deeply hurt by being thrown out of Anderson's projects and just went on his own way, then fair enough. But actually reforming Tull without him is the ultimate insult and really hits home with the actual reformed Tull concerts soon coming to fruition.

As the old adage goes Frank, if the topic is old to you, just pass it by. It will never be old to me as I know that Barre's role in Tull was extremely diminished by Anderson over the last 20 years and Barre still wanted to play in that diminished capacity, and in fact was happy to do so. He still enjoyed it. As for praising Anderson, you've found much more of his recent output to appreciate than the average fan. His time of greatness was well over years ago. As his muse failed, treating his old band mates well was the last act that would have ensured his greatness as the group's leader. Sorry for my late reaction to this dissing of Barre, but time has not made it palpable to me or acceptable. Only worse.

But it is not a reformed Tull. It is Ian Anderson and his band performing Tull songs in tribute of its 50th Anniversary. There is a difference, ever so slight.

Are there any other former Tull members in IA's current touring band?

And that makes Barre asked to perform as a special guest (the special guest) out of the question?

Do we know with any certainty that he wasn't asked to perform?

David Goodier and John O'Hara were members of the last incarnation of Tull, and Florian Opahle had already depped for Martin Barre at a few shows when Martin was suffering from a hand injury.

The biggest time was in the Queens of the Stone Age episode where they take turns shooting a Jethro Tull album with a bow and arrow. The funny thing is they look to be shooting a copy of Stand Up rather than Crest of a Knave. I bet Bourdain would actually like Stand Up!
This thread blew up, so I didn't open it for a while. To answer this though,..I never heard him mention the Grammy thing. The comment I was referring to was something along the lines of (paraphrasing) "Jethro Tull drives me crazy. I hate that whole flute-on-one-leg English diddly-diddly thing." So, I think it's a combination of him not liking English Folk and Ian's whole Exaggerated Court Minstrel persona. He strikes me more as a Ramones kind of guy.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect him to like it, that's for sure. You're probably spot on with the Ramones! He would have made a good frustrated-wannabe-musician cum record-store manager too.

Except nothing has been re-formed, you know? The musos are the same as for the past decade or so.

Why do you think they shouldn't have booked it? Do you think they're supposed to decide that Ian's voice is no longer good enough, or that he shouldn't tour without Martin Barre? They're billing it as what the tour is officially called: "Ian Anderson Presents JETHRO TULL 50th Anniversary Tour." What more should they do? They just had King Crimson there without Bill Bruford, was that wrong of them?

^ Except for Anthony Bourdain. He'd view that as an improvement.

Jethro Tull will always be the guy who stands on one leg, sings, and plays the flute. You could assemble a band made of every former Tull member except Anderson and people would wonder where the guy is that stands on one leg and plays the flute.

I would really like to see the Martin Barre Band. If they swung through California, I totally missed them though. Going the more rough and ready way as a coda for Tull's music really resonates with me more than the more theatric approach Anderson is taking.

I really love Tull music. Few bands have been so formative to my tastes and general warped outlook on life.
