I just heard a song from this new group called Greta Van Fleet - Highway song

I was listening to my local college radio station WXPN out of U of P in Phila. and they were having their annual fund raiser to support the station and I was about to turn the station off and the radio person said that I should check out this new band and so I left it on and thank god I did because I thought I just heard the most amazing new Rock band that reminded me a lot of Led Zeppelin in the early days especially the singer .....Check it out if you dare on You tube and tell me what you think of Greta Van Fleet- Highway tune / song.....I cant believe it has over 3.1 million hits already

These kids are from Frankenmuth Michigan (about 1.5 hours east of me) and are currently the hottest thing going in the State. Their profile is really rising fast. I have not seen them live yet, but know several people who have and I have heard nothing but praise. They appear to be the real deal.

This tune caught my attention on WXPN also...had the same Led Zep comparison going in my head. Great song!

"I am so proud of these boys I went to school with them and just thought they were a cute little garage band they turned out great."

    What he said.

I work in a record store in Michigan and we can't keep this thing in stock. Mostly a "mature crowd" buying it at our store because that's our core compact disc customer -- old rockers (and old jazzers). In fact this thing hasn't been available on CD all that long; it was download only for the longest time. Finally the label woke up. It's just an EP. Hopefully they put out a full length once the EP starts to cool off a little.

They played a couple of weeks ago at the smaller room (The Stache) at The Intersection in Grand Rapids MI and sold it out. They have just been announced as coming back in December and will be playing the big room (around 1000 capacity), and I have heard tickets are going quickly.

Thanks for letting me in on these guys IM4ever.... I Just played the 2 tracks above on KWCW in walla walla. They are playing up here in Washington today or tomorrow I think. Sound great but the Zep mimicry may be a detriment... Still I liked them.
    Still alive and well...

My initial reaction was to dismiss these guys as yet another Led Zeppelin wanna be band, lord knows there were enough of those in the 1980's, but damn, after listening to some of the live stuff...there's definitely something more going on here, a weird reincarnation as opposed to a recreation. Cool.

I just saw on Facebook today that they are taking pre-orders for a new "Double EP" coming out soon. Not sure why a double EP would not just be an album, but.........

The new cd from what I have learned is a remix or rerelease of the first cd which had 4 songs and now including 4 new tunes for a total of 8 songs. In the old days I thought 8 songs was a complete / full album but what do I know.....

    not wannabes, but clones, IMHO

That kid's voice has got Percy's down pat, though.

The new 8 song cd " from the fires " is out and I am loving it for sure.
The cd released late last week consists of a replay of the original 4 songs released from the cd "Black smoke rising" and 4 new tunes two of which are covers ( one of which I am not crazy about).
Summary: Solid rock and roll band with amazing vocalist and if they maintain their momentum I can see them playing as the main act at larger halls in the future....and if it doesn't work for the group the vocalist could always give Jimmy a call.....

I guess there are only so many types of music available in the world. Since LZ isn't producing anymore it must be open for anybody else to step in.

I heard some of their latest album in the music store about a week ago. Sounded so much like LZ I had to ask who it was. I liked what I heard, but then....I kinda burned out on Zep a long time ago.

I finally had the chance to sit down and give their new album a good listen. If anything they are little bit too much like Led Zeppelin. I mean, they have the Zep sound down pat from the screeching Plant like vocals to the Page / Bonham / Jones musical accompaniment. It is not like this has not been done before (anyone remember Kingdom Come from back in the late 80’s?). Anyway, they are great at what they do and I would think anyone who digs Zep would probably get a kick out of this. It will be interesting to see how they develop from here.

I really enjoy their stuff Steve...all of it! They are pretty good songwriters and that's what should make the difference. Very catchy tunes and yes, they are very LZ like, but that's ok by me, but as I always say, it's the music that counts. BTW, last fall I heard Highway Tune on a local rock radio station, so it seems that they are really catching on to the mainstream.

Count me in as another old fart who's damned impressed, and I saw LZ 4 times between 69-72.

I first heard them on radio, too. I was driving along and said to my wife, "These guys sound like Led Zeppelin, but this is no song LZ ever did." I have heard them all, as Zep were probably my favorite band 40-some odd years ago in high school. Nice to hear someone playing a Gibson. Most modern bands don't even do guitar solos; some don't seem to have heard of electricity. Fantastic singer. Original songs; if not overall sound. Color me impressed.

Yea, "Highway Tune" is an instant earworm for sure. I think the whole album is good. The only song that does not work that well for me is the cover of "A Change Is Gonna Come". For some reason his voice does not really work for me on that one, but the rest is all solid. Keeping in mind that these are just kids, it is all pretty amazing.

Every five or ten years, somebody re-invents Zeppelin. Same with the Beatles. Same with The Band. And people constantly re-invent the Velvets, the Stones, Dylan and soul music because that's easier - you need good lyrics for Dylan but just good lyrics, the Velvets are a mood, the Stones are a certain kind of band feel, and while soul music needs great vocals and a good band, it doesn't necessarily need great songs. Quite a lot of young hipster art-rock echoes Talking Heads in its self-conscious quirkiness.

These are all classic, durable sounds, they never seem to lose their appeal, and so it's no surprise that people keep repeatedly recreating them.
