Kaipa - Children of the Sounds

New one from the 'modern' Kaipa which, to be honest, I prefer. Melodious, complex and bats*** nutty lyrics

Cool. I lost track of these guys way back when. I'll check out there samples.

Love that guitar tone! Who's in the band?

Same lineup since Roine left after Mindrevolutions, so the last 4 or 5 releases.

That's the mighty Per Nilsson (Scar Symmetry) on guitar. He is perfect in Kaipa!!!
    Also in the group:

    Founder Hans Lundin on keys
    Jonas Reingold on bass
    Morgan Agren on drums
And the twin vocal stylings of Aleena Gibson (my favorite female vocalist ever) and Patrik Lundstrom from the great band Ritual.

Why this band doesn't receive more love here is beyond me. How many bands could lose Roine Stolt and actually get better?!!!

I understand what you mean, but since Kaipa started out in the 70s doing symphonic prog rock, it's a little different in this case IMO.

I think because of Roine and the TFK connection, they get a pretty fair amount of love in comparison to a lot of music around here imo (as most bands with a "connection" tend to). I can't say I care for any Kaipa beyond the 70s releases personally. I have tried.

IMHO, I think the writing suffers without Roine. It's not bad at all, just not as good, as he and Hans really complemented each other.

I love Hans Lundins writing but I prefer Roines dynamic playing. The Lundin Kaipa is just his band with hired hands, Per is a good and very skilled metal guitarist but he lacks Roines much more dynamic and varied playing and by that Lundin Kaipa suffers IMHO. Kaipa DaCapo is the other way around - they're more like a bunch of friends of Roines getting together and having fun. The tension between Hans intricate and Zappa-like arrangements and Roines more loose feel (and integrity as a natural front man) would make a band greater than the sum of its parts. And yes, they must share the production work equal too

This is as "auto-buy" as it gets.

I've only heard the first 2 modern Kaipa albums, and the second was much better than the debut.

Completely agree. Great players in the band, but recent Kaipa albums feel like there is no bigger picture, no arc to some of the songs, etc. Some songs, while containing great playing, just seem to go on interminably for no apparent reason.

I have no criticism of Per's guitar playing at all, but even amazing guitarists should do what they do in service to great material.

Kaipa Da Capo is like the anti-Lundin Kaipa. It's much more about vibe and has far, far less note density than Lundin Kaipa.

    Whole song now released:

I enjoy the "modern" Kaipa, though I've found that since about the 4th album, they just do the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over (etc.) again. It's enjoyable but they are like a prog version of Ozric Tentacles...........you have one album, you have them all. I still think the first two albums (with Stolt) are far superior to anything they've done since. I also prefer the Kaipa Da Capo album to any of the albums by the "modern" Kaipa. That said, the 70's Kaipa albums have never really done a lot for me, though they are good and it's fun to hear Roine in his early days learning his trade.

Roine actually only ever wrote anything on one modern Kaipa album, Keyholder. That said, I agree with you, as that is by far the best modern Kaipa album IMO.

I pretty much agree with this sentiment (except for the last point about 70's Kaipa - there is great stuff on those first 3 albums)

Kaipa DC is really the true Kaipa now with 3/4 original members and a great new album out. I already have pre-ordered this new Kaipa HL but tend to agree that most of the post Stolt albums have been somewhat samey - there are still some good melodies in there and of course great playing with Reingold and Ågren but the songs themselves are a little interchangeable. Keyholder and Notes From the Past are fantastic albums though - it's too bad Roine and Hans couldn't work together but hey we fans get to enjoy two versions/visions of the same band so great for us!

He did write some of the lyrics on Mindrevolutions - but yes no music according to the credits.

Incredible guitar playing in that clip. I want a 20-minute guitar-centric instrumental from these guys, lol.
