There's nothing like the Solina if you're looking for some decent string sounds. Different from the Mellotron. Lots of other synths can do strings, but the Solina is just a go to for that for me.

None of the oodles of string machine soft synths come close enough for me. I vividly remember that sound from using a beat up Solina in the very early 80's. I'm hoping they nailed this one.

I considered some sort of action but she never gave me a receipt. Who wouldn’t trust the woman that repairs CHURCH INSTRUMENTS? The internationally respected owner of Rainbow Guitars in Tucson said, “she is completely trustworthy and has repaired my Hammond.” I gave it more time…I was sure she was only prioritizing other, more important/expensive repairs for other (church) clients, and would finish up my board.
Well, that was 6 years ago. I gave up. Lesson learned.
I eventually got myself the Waldorf Streichfett. It is a killer unit! Small, powerful, and has those rich “70s” string sounds. Camel discography here I come!
Curious….which Roland boutiques do you have? And how do you like them overall?
I ran into noise issues with mine too (for me it was coming from using the USB for MIDI), so I really haven’t messed with them too much since. I like the sound well enough, but it may just be the form factor for me. And I really don’t links them 1/8” output jacks. Sound is otherwise pretty good (I have the JX03 and SH01)…..though only 4 voices is a bit lame.
I thought the answer was 42.

It's been a crappy week in Synthland, with the news about the Moog layoffs and Model Electronics going into administration (I've been diving into my lil' Skulpt SE recently, with their quite useful iOS editor app.) One of my upcoming projects is another installment in the Rivers of Asphalt series, which are aural travelogues down classic American roads we've at least partially traversed. Route 66 and the Lincoln Highway served as the inspiration for the first two releases (Rivers of Asphalt and The Father Road).
This time out, I am doing the Blue Ridge Parkway, but with a more immediate, improvisational Berlin School approach, but limiting the sonics to Asheville-based or inspired synths (hard and soft). So Moog and Make Noise, basically. XILS-Lab's Polymoog app is likely to be the only third party synth I use (perhaps the Arturia Moog Modular). I considered dropping this approach after InMusic bought Moog and the recent layoffs, but decided to proceed in respect for those still employed with Moog, the Moog Foundation, and Asheville itself.
I did a little stem on the iPad using Moog's Model 15 and Model D apps along with a couple MoogerFooger efx. My older iPad crapped out if I tried to add any more plugins in AUM. Ha! Here's that hot stem action. I plan on overdubbing and developing this more for the final release, likely in 2025.

While reading some old reviews of instruments I have a virtual representation of, like the Korg Lambda, the Korg Trident and the Korg DW-6000 DW-8000, I found an old interview with Roger Powell, made around the time when he released Air pocket and he tells about the possibilities of computers in music. Funny to see how the interviewer almost looses track, while everything is crystal clear now.
I'm no expert (on anything!), but I've read the issue with noise coming from the Boutiques has to do with where you plug in the USB for power. It appears the best workaround is getting a power bank like the one Mophie makes and going into that and bypassing any PC source altogether.
I wanted the JU-06A till I saw it has 4-note polyphony.
Ok, first, Solina. Resounding YAY! I fired it up and before I hit the modulation button was a little concerned. But then I remembered "ensemble". As soon as I hit the mod button....there it was. Sounds awesome.

Roland boutiques. I've had these a while but I haven't set anything up till very recently, so I didn't realize the issues with them. I have 2x JP08 and a JD08. USB powered units are crap to begin with. USB was never intended for audio use. They cause bad ground loops and bleed digital noise. So, the solution people are dealing with? Battery power. So you can keep feeding these things batteries to help combat the noise. However, that is only part of it. You have to make sure you're not getting power over the USB line or it still wants to power it that way. My solution was to solder a Micro B USB jack to the battery terminals and use a phone charger with a splitter to power all 3. A 2A charger is sufficient. The problem still exist with the USB even without power because as soon as you plug it in (even to an unpowered hub, still gets pc power), the noise level skyrockets. The JPs have a washing machine kinda noise where the JD is more of a hum. And what happens when you chain the 2 JPs together (audio out #2 into #1), the noise goes exponential. So, MIDI is the only option, no USB connections. Its livable if these are only turned up when in use. They do sound good though, though I've never been a big Roland fan, I wanted some of those sounds covered. I'm ditching the second JP08 as the chaining sucks. The first unit feeds over any notes beyond 4 to the second unit. There's no reason these couldn't have been 8 voice to begin with.
The Virus Snow I had to use a USB isolator to tame the noise from that. The Typhon I had to buy their USB/Power (bloody) splitter to quiet that down some. And now I had to unchain one of the USB hubs because Windows decided it didn't like it, so I had to run a separate USB cable direct to the PC to clear that up. I'm surprised i have any hair left after all this and I'm not finished with all the wiring yet.
Well, maybe more later. I have to go get some more shots! And not the good kind.

Well, only got the covid booster for old rockers.
Decided against the second Shingrex shot for now. First shot gave me a rose red arm for a week. With Progstock last week, I can wait till after. I did make it back with a variety of Stouts though

Might be interesting, but unless I win the lottery, not for me.
At this moment I seem to have a funny, or not so funny problem. I have a trial version of Cubase Pro 12, but the trial period ends tomorrow (not sure if it works tomorrow, or not), so I should buy the update, which I wanted to do today. Alas the online shop is run by a third party and they have entered into self-administered insolvency, so they have to find a new business partner.

This was my third time seeing TD and crazy as it seems...I think it was my favorite. Setlist was a good balance and had some cool surprises. I wanted a little more from Raum but we got 3 tunes so that's more than Yes does off THEIR latest albums
