Which "big-name" artists' deaths would affect you the most?

I'll let you decide what "big-name" means. A few that come to mind are Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett, Robert Fripp, Brian Eno and Andy Partridge, since they're all still capable of putting out great music. Also Paul McCartney, since that would represent the end of an era. Now that I think of it, Pete Sinfield, Robert Wyatt, Ian Anderson, Justin Hayward... I'd better stop now!

Steve Hackett for sure----Yes was ruined a long time ago---I used to think the death of JA or Howe or Squire or any of the classic guys would put an end to Yes---but unfortunately they zombie along---but the last departure of JA and Wakeman really affected me a lot. I wish they could have stayed together.

Well eventually everyone will go, but if I'm still around, the above will bring the memories and the tears.

I don't know what's going on with all these superstars dying, but I have my suspicions:

Richard Thompson would utterly destroy me. I don't even want to think about it.

I would not know until it happened.

From a strictly selfish standpoint, Robin Trower, because I have tickets to see him on May 7th for the first time in about 40 years.

On a more serious note, probably these fine musicians who helped shaped my youth:

    Ian Anderson
    David Gilmour
    Bob Dylan
    Neil Young
    Justin Hayward
    Alice Cooper
    Peter Gabriel
    Jimmy Page
    Ritchie Blackmore

    I guess many artists.

Personal friends who are "artists", whether the world considers them "big name" or not, would devastate me far more than anyone I "worshipped" from afar.

    That would be:

Aldo Tagliapietra (71 now and 2 weeks younger than me) and his family

Eirik, Kim, J.T., L.P & Eirikur of Magic Pie & their partners + L.P.'s daughter

Every member of Sonus Umbra and their loved ones

Steve Katsikas & Roy Strattman of Little Atlas and their spouses

Mark Colton of Credo & Elaine & their 2 boys

Kerry Chicoine & Jerry Beller of Heliopolis

Robert James Pashman of 3RD Degree

The Akesson brothers, Petter & Johan of Moon Safari, and former drummer Tobias Lundgren

Leslie, Jonathan & Jim of District 97

    Mike Visaggio of KInetic Element

    Probably more I can't remember

Losing Peter Hammill would probably be the worst for me, not counting some of the musicians that I have become friendly with.

No artists come to mind, but I'd sure hate to lose any fellow PE members.

This thread is viewed differently by someone who's 71 than by someone who's 51 I assure you.

Had this been asked two years ago, I'd have probably mentioned Squire and Emerson. Having been through those, I guess I'd say Jon Anderson, Plant, Page and JPJ, Brufored, Howe to some extent, maybe Ian Anderson. Most of these people if they live another 5-10 years will be old enough to feel they had good, long lives. And that mitigates the feeling of loss for me. Here's to them all living well into their 90s!

Of big names, no one's death would pain me more than Tony Banks.

Many others of course, such as Dave Stewart, Anthony Phillips, Steve Hackett, Roine Stolt, Kerry Minnear, and many, many others. And don't get me started on the 'not so big' name artists!

Isn't it sad we even have to have a thread like this. Where is that promised world without death?

I was more affected by Keith Emerson's death than any other musician. I did wonder for a few days if I'd be able to play anything he did again. But in fact I've been through every single ELP album a few times over the last month- the music will live on.

And certainly in the UK, there was almost a sense of the whole nation genuinely mourning David Bowie's death...quite right too.

As for the question, Paul McCartney and anyone in Genesis in particular, for me.
