They got better with every album

Are there any acts you can think of where each album was better than, or at least as good as, the preceding one?

It's a rare artist or band that manages to do this. Most seem to lose the plot at some point, even if they later make a solid comeback.

Right now i am working my way through ABBA's catalogue, and I'm inclined to nominate ABBA.

Thought of another one, which probably not many of you will know: Midnight Juggernauts.

An Australian band that I like to call "progressive dance". They have only done three full length studio albums so far, so it's a little early to tell.

For me The Beatles come pretty close. The way they evolved over a period of less than 10 years is still pretty amazing to me. I can’t think of too many others off the top of my head. I am not familiar enough with ABBA's catalogue to have an opinion on them, and have not heard of the other band you mention.

    Maybe the metal band Death.
    The Police?

It was all downhill for The Beatles after Sgt. Pepper!

    Can't think of any band!

    Cast, maybe?

ABBA for sure. The Visitors is unquestionably their best album, and “The Day Before You Came” (their penultimate single A-side) is arguably their best song.

^ABBA without a doubt. 'Like An Angel Passing Through My Room' is a song on The Visitors where you think, 'they were doing 'Bang A Boomerang' around 6/7 years earlier!'.

An interesting one in that I think they stayed the same throughout their short career. I don't think they ever made a 'perfect' album, from the debut through to Synchronicity there are some real turkeys on every album...in fact the latter has the worst of them all ('Mother')!

I don't like Ghost In the Machine as much as Zenyatta Mondatta. I do think Synchronicity was their best album, but you're right, it has the worst turkey. "Mother" actually sounds quite good at first, until the singing starts.

IMO, Regatta was their best, followed by Ghost and Zenyatta. Outlandos is too pedestrian/pub-rocky for me while Synchronicity contains too much hot air.

The Byrds up to and including Sweetheart of the Rodeo.
The Clash up to and including London Calling. Sandinista is mighty good, but it's all over the place.

I was thinking of Spirit, but Clear was a bit of a dud. Maybe they were holding it in for Dr. Sardonicus.

Looking forward to my day in court.

IQ could fit this description for me.

Yep. Talk Talk is surely a very strong candidate.

By no means. While they maybe became more complex and "interesting" with "Spiritual Healing" and "Human", they lost forever their immediate power and reckless abandon of their classic debut and "Leprosy". Can you repeat in your head any song our of what came after 1989 like you do anytime with such anthems as Pull The Plug or Zombie Ritual? Extreme metal and complexity rarely paired together in harmony i.m.o.

The later Clash stuff, 1979-82, is way more interesting than what they did earlier. I can't get into Give 'Em Enough Rope in particular at all.

Clear Spirit is worth having for 'Give A Life Take A Life' alone.

Talk Talk and IQ both came to mind and I see I'm not alone there.

Clear morphed from Model Shop sessions so maybe it can be discounted.

To imply IQ have made a better album since Subterranea is just ridiculous!

I'm not implying that, I'm flat-out stating it as clearly as I can.

Because I am to change my opinion based on fan polls? Nah. They keep getting better. And Orford was still on the next couple beyond Subterranea BTW.

I agree with Progatron. Although Subterranea is a very good album, it is not as good as anything IQ has released since.
