Weather Report digitally recorded every concert from the mixing board starting very early in their career. In 2002, while Joe was still alive, he issued "Live and Unreleased," a 2-CD set of heavily-edited (and overdubbed) live recordings from around the world. The TROUBLE with live Weather Report recordings -- if it's a "trouble" -- is that the band played their songs in concert almost identically to the original recordings. There isn't a whole lot to recommend them, unless you really want to hear applause before and after every album cut.

No doubt there are a myriad of outstanding performances hidden away in Tony's vault. I for one might even have to buy the boxed set just because I miss WR so much.

But revelations? Discoveries? Surprises? Not likely.

Madagascar studio version 10:45. Version on this collection 17:45
Night Passage studio version 6:30. Version on this collection 10:07
Port of Entry studio version 5:09. Version on this collection 12:34
Gibraltar studio version 8:16. Version on this collection 21:07

Their live performances are in NO WAY identical to their studio counterparts.

This release is a beast and a half...even if you're only a casual fan of Weather Report the performances here are mind-bogglingly fantastic.

Cool. It's on my Christmas list now.

Sounds as if you've heard the set already (November 20 release date) -- were you somehow involved with the production? Do you know if the recordings are heavily edited, overdubbed or taken from vastly different concerts -- or is there some sense of "concert continuity" here? The track list is an excellent representation:
    Track Listing

    Disc 1
    1) 8:30
    2) Sightseeing
    3) Brown Street
    4) The Orphan
    5) Forlorn
    6) Three Views of A Secret
    7) Badia/Boogie Waltz
    8) Wayne Solo
    9) Jaco Solo (Osaka 1980)

    Disc 2
    1) Joe and Wayne Duet (Tokyo 1978)
    2) Birdland
    3) Peter's Solo
    4) A Remark You Made
    5) Continuum/River People
    6) Gibraltar

    Disc 3
    1) Fast City
    2) Madagascar
    3) Night Passage
    4) Dream Clock
    5) Rockin' In Rhythm
    6) Port of Entry

    Disc 4
    1) Elegant People
    2) Scarlet Women
    3) Black Market
    4) Jaco Solo (Osaka 1978)
    5) Teen Town
    6) Peter's Solo (Osaka 1978)
    7) Directions

Yeah. For me, once Jaco joined, my interest in WR went away for the most part.

Not the party line, I know....

I liked the pre Jaco show at Painters Mill better than the Jaco show at the Lyric.

I don't care what you guys say, I loved Jaco! I dug WR before him too and granted, he all but took the band over, but he was an incredible musician, at least before he lost his marbles.

Unfortunately true -- incredible musician, but WR was more than just Joe and Wayne before Jaco joined and more than just Joe and Wayne after Jaco was gone. Would've loved to see the band with Dom Un Romao and Miroslav Vitous.

He was an incredible musician. I just don't care too much for him, despite his obviously huge talents.

I could go for a live box set of the original band. That's when they were really playing some jazz and improvising.

^ Yeah...this is not my favorite period of WR. However, I've yet to be disappointed in any live WR album, so I'll be getting this one.
Please don't ask questions, just use google.

Same here. Live - a different sound for me. A lot better. Jaco -- amazing player but I'm with Steve too - my fav period was pre Jaco as well.

I loved his solo album, "Infinite Search" (which also can be found with a different name, "Mountain in the Clouds." ). I dug him with WR too. They went through so many personnel and concept changes that you could say they were a great bunch of bands.

BTW, I recently read Peter Erskine's book, "No Beethoven." The majority of it is about his time with WR and I'd highly recommend it to fans of that band.

The interesting thing about both Vitous and Jaco is that they both led big band -orchestra projects .

Very interesting title in that book

He said that he had taken piano lessons and could play some classical repertoire, but no Beethoven. Yeah, it's a dumb title, but an enjoyable book.

I'd like to read that book. Erskine is a favorite. He has such a great balance when he plays. Hardly ever a wasted note.

I'm a HUGE Miroslav fan. I got turned on to him when I got the McLaughlin/Coryell "Spaces" album WAY BACK in the day.

I agree, a Pre-Jaco box set would be the Balls too.

  24. #24
I'd certainly consider buying a Miroslav era set. Questions would be if tapes exist in good enough quality, and if there are any issues between him and Joe/Wayne that might hold up a release.

I don't think Joe would mind.
