Weather Report digitally recorded every concert from the mixing board starting very early in their career. In 2002, while Joe was still alive, he issued "Live and Unreleased," a 2-CD set of heavily-edited (and overdubbed) live recordings from around the world. The TROUBLE with live Weather Report recordings -- if it's a "trouble" -- is that the band played their songs in concert almost identically to the original recordings. There isn't a whole lot to recommend them, unless you really want to hear applause before and after every album cut.
No doubt there are a myriad of outstanding performances hidden away in Tony's vault. I for one might even have to buy the boxed set just because I miss WR so much.
But revelations? Discoveries? Surprises? Not likely.
Madagascar studio version 10:45. Version on this collection 17:45
Night Passage studio version 6:30. Version on this collection 10:07
Port of Entry studio version 5:09. Version on this collection 12:34
Gibraltar studio version 8:16. Version on this collection 21:07
Their live performances are in NO WAY identical to their studio counterparts.
This release is a beast and a half...even if you're only a casual fan of Weather Report the performances here are mind-bogglingly fantastic.

Cool. It's on my Christmas list now.
Sounds as if you've heard the set already (November 20 release date) -- were you somehow involved with the production? Do you know if the recordings are heavily edited, overdubbed or taken from vastly different concerts -- or is there some sense of "concert continuity" here? Yeah, this seems seriously bad@ss.
2nd item now on my Xmas list (right under the RUSH R40 DVD set)
Thanks for posting about this.
Yeah. For me, once Jaco joined, my interest in WR went away for the most part.
Not the party line, I know....

I don't care what you guys say, I loved Jaco! I dug WR before him too and granted, he all but took the band over, but he was an incredible musician, at least before he lost his marbles.
^ ^
He was an incredible musician. I just don't care too much for him, despite his obviously huge talents.

I could go for a live box set of the original band. That's when they were really playing some jazz and improvising.
^ Yeah...this is not my favorite period of WR. However, I've yet to be disappointed in any live WR album, so I'll be getting this one.
Please don't ask questions, just use google.
Never let good music get in the way of making a profit.
I'm only here to reglaze my bathtub.
Who knew Miroslav had so many fans ?
I loved his solo album, "Infinite Search" (which also can be found with a different name, "Mountain in the Clouds." ). I dug him with WR too. They went through so many personnel and concept changes that you could say they were a great bunch of bands.
BTW, I recently read Peter Erskine's book, "No Beethoven." The majority of it is about his time with WR and I'd highly recommend it to fans of that band.
I'll pass: wrong era for me
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.
I'd like to read that book. Erskine is a favorite. He has such a great balance when he plays. Hardly ever a wasted note.
I'd certainly consider buying a Miroslav era set. Questions would be if tapes exist in good enough quality, and if there are any issues between him and Joe/Wayne that might hold up a release.
I don't think Joe would mind.
