And there were a few UK jazzers who dabbled in JR/F already in 68/69, Ian carr wasn't the only one.

Indeed. very good description of the group, and absolutely indispensable for fans of both RTF and WR. For a time only the S/T and Sky Islands were available on CD. However, Dreamer was also released earlier this year. If you want Time and Chance for your iTunes you will have to convert from Youtube, where some one had the brilliant idea of uploading all the album.

Oh, I completely agree (big fan of Flora), but most of her albums don't seem like what the OP is looking for. To me, her two most killer and intense fusion albums are Open Your Eyes You Can Fly and That's What She Said from 1976-77.

Not sure if mid seventies counts as early or not, but if it does I nominate Sea Level

Not early, and very little rock but rather a jazz-band-proper-with-some-rock-influence, Albert Mangeldorff's quartet MUMPS' sole release A Matter of Taste from 1977. This was essentially Mangelsdorff leading the John Surman trio (with the latter plus Stu Martin and Barre Phillips), with terrific end results.

I owned this record in the mid-90s, sold it to vast later regret (as with the Elton Dean's Just Us album) - and when I finally caught up with another copy and went to buy it after collecting the dough, it was GONE!!

The influence of this release can still be heard in groups like Orchester 33 1/3 (Austria), The Source (Norway) and the Mitteleuropa Ensemble (Italy).

Don't leave before you get to the groove!

Then I assume you're referring to Magma the Zeuhl founders, who are not ROI or a "noise band", and are in fact very much steeped in jazz and especially the music of Coltrane.

Incidentally, I'm curious which other Magma is jazz-rock as I wasn't aware of any others.

Please elaborate as to what "RIO noise" might be, and how Magma are supposed to fit in with that.

Interestingly, with the number of threads on both Rock-In-Opposition and Magma/Zeuhl by contributors with actual insight on these matters, I can't remember ever having read Magma as RIO or RIO as "noise" - so it would be nice to finally be enlightened.

There are, by the way, four other relatively well known Magmas; Rock Duo Magma from Germany (not jazz-rock), a Korean hard rock group, an Argentinian ethnic fusion band and a death metal one from Mexico (I believe). If not that "RIO noise" Magma, which Magma would you recommend the OP?
