Thread: I need a band that won't drive me Crazy!

I need a band that won't drive me Crazy!

Seriously. I haven't found a music group that I really love since I discovered "Elbow"* a few years ago. I know they are out there. They don't have to be prog. I don't want them to sound like Gabriel, Genesis (whom I loved), I don't want any cheezy synths or uninspired drumming or songs that lack confidence or don't go anywhere.

I do like "Arcade Fire" quite a bit. Who's out there that I can get into? I've been listening to camples of
Prog bands on Amazon and they are boring! Boring I say!

I'm 61, maybe I'm too old or heard it all before. Maybe it's the summer sun. Throw me a lifeline guys and gals.

*Yeah I know Elbow's singer sounds a bit like Gabriel.

Dang, there's so much good stuff, at least it sounds good to me. Have you heard:

    Crazy Cool - Thinking Plague
    Beautiful - Ciccada
A trip without LSD - Magma
Great composition - Advent (clips of the new Advent on the current new Advent thread)
Just good well rounded prog - Sanguine Hum

None of the above are boring at all, don't rely on cheesy synths, and are quite inspired, in my opinion. I hope at least one of them work for you.

Ziggy Marley's "Jahmekya" is one of my all-time favourite albums. I recommend it, without hesitation.
I listen to it often and have loved it for more than twenty years.
Great music for the beautiful summer time.

I know why Elbow doesnt drive you crazy. It will put you to sleep!

I' d rather have a band that drives me crazy. Try Cardiacs!
...or if you like a bite more mellow : Jack O' the Clock.
    Both truly original bands.

Based on the mentions of Elbow and Arcade Fire, these guys/gals should definitely be worth a try.

(I've never really thought Guy Garvey sounded Gabriel-like. I suppose I can hear an influence in some of his inflections if you particularly listen for 'em, but that's about it.)

Doesn't get much better than these two.

Might I suggest a lil 'ol band called Yes?

Thanks folks. That gives me something to look for. I do like "Echolyn" a bit. I respect them even if sometimes I have trouble getting into their stuff. I heard a bit of "Sanguine Hum" that I thought was very good. And thanks Spiral! Second sight looks worth checking out. I guess I need to be more patient and give bands a longer listen. I hear that Guy Garvey has a solo album coming out. I am curious about that.

Are you looking for active bands?

What drives you crazy? Simply what you've written? :
I don't want them to sound like Gabriel, Genesis (whom I loved), I don't want any cheezy synths or uninspired drumming or songs that lack confidence or don't go anywhere.

Might I suggest Gotye ? Yes, some compare 'some' songs to Gabriel, but I like his overall work so far

Hmmm, just checked Elbow out. Dreadful stuff. Personally, I would give them the Elbow.

Your best heading towards Radiohead or Coldplay and avoiding Mahavishnu Orchestra and Amon Düül II.

Good pick. I get a little Gabriel vibe from him, but you could say there's as much similarity to Imogen Heap or Laurie Anderson. It's more down to creative tinkering with technology rather than any real resemblance in sound.

Good suggestion. His album Making Mirrors was excellent, but Like Drawing Blood was no slouch -- the song "Heart's a Mess" is lovely.

Some band that will thrill you, and then go away? Some band that knows the meaning of "Hey, hit the highway!"?

But seriously, the original post is impossible to answer without more information. It may be that SW/PT is precisely what you are trying to avoid.

I have been getting into Midnight Oil lately, many years after they hit their popularity peak, and am finding a lot of their stuff to be - trying to avoid the word "progressive" - shall we say, imaginative and unusual.

The last band I fell in love with was Wolf People. I don't know if you would like them, but they hit all the points with me.

This second video isn't much to look at but that song is great.

On the one hand, the OP taste and my taste seems to be totally different (inspite Elbow seems to be nice for me) so who am I to recommand? On the other hand, maybe you should try KnifeWorld. Refreshing, not much of an old symph prog and not cheezy at all.
Other suggestion is Ciccada. Lean on folk, no cheezy synth at all, and instead of it, acoustic guitars, flute, and a female vocalist.

Was this song going through your head when you created this thread?

    How about Blaudzun?

And look, they even have Persian rugs.
