WTF with all the "Top Five"

OK, I get the compulsion to make lists. All music fans do it, regardless of genre. I have no doubt that there's a country forum with a "top five drinking songs" thread. Of course, some of you are so drawn to these things it's either comic or tragic. Seriously. Get.Some.Help. But "top five"? It's ridiculous. You have to do top ten with most music lists. I blame the movie High Fidelity. Top Five makes no one happy, it only forces you to make cruel choices you'll later regret. Top ten or even top twenty make much more sense. Less favorites left by the roadside, less choices that you regret.
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart

^^ If you don't want to take part in a thread, you don't have to, do you? Why stress about it?

I would prefer top 7 or 9 or 11 or something odd as I'm not a fan of even numbers.

What happened to the underwear thread???

Rank your top five all-time favorite top five threads.

Seriously, I just ignore them. List threads are a waste of time. That's all you need to do.

Top 5 favourite reasons why Phil Collins ruined Genesis would be fun!

Just for pointing out...these "Top 5" threads are supposed to go in another area on PE.

    "Off-Topic (OT) - Music And Arts(112 Viewing)
Off-Topic (OT) - discussions about other forms of music and arts. Inclusdes threads with Lists of ... whatever. (Post music-related RIP notices here.)"

Your post is conspicuously devoid of excessive exclamation marks and obtuse references to reader surveys...and is therefore invalid.

And 'drummers' polls'! And anti-jazz tirades!

Yes, I've been taken aback by the amount of Top 5 threads appearing on the main page. I haven't looked at one of them- no room for any discussion in threads like that, so they are boring IMHO.

They seem a touch narcissistic to me , offering no dialogue. I m sure I m being too serious about it but it feels like somebody just shouting and then the other shouting with no intention to connect.

I'm finding this thread boring and annoying. I think I'll go visit one of the "Top 5" threads."

For the record (or, er, cd ) I don't have a problem with these lists. And in looking at the number or replies/views some obviously carry traction. That being said, this is a good example for a forum feature I'd love to see and that is the option to "hide" a thread from view. Sort of putting a thread on "ignore". This would keep the "new posts" to either threads I'm following, may be interested in, or are recently started threads.

nah - the five things that ruined Genesis

    1) Hackett's departure
    2) Gabriel's departure
    3) ATTWT
    4) CAS - (especially the "efforts" of Banks and Rutherford)
    5) Peter Nicholls/Fish not joining in the late 80's!

I guess some people have nothing better to do? How bout' top 5 reasons most of us can't be on this forum all day long? And really, who the hell cares about everyone's top five. Are we all some type of authority on music? Is our top 5 of any importance. Waste of time...I'm moving on.

Every few months there is a burst of such threads that normally last a week at most, they're just a bit of fun, no need to read them if you don't like them.

I think we should do Top 5 Most Hated Bands.

That should get the juices flowing.
