    Magma in the UK

Not long now so I thought it might be worth starting a thread for those of us anticipating a rare visit by Magma to these shores.

Anyone else going to one of the UK shows? I'm really looking forward to seeing them in London.

I'm kind of hoping that the setlist will remain the same as the NA dates but will be happy with pretty much anything.

I'm going to the London gig. The venue looks quite swish, and it's just off Sloane Square!
Maybe they should change their name to Margma for this gig.

Less than a day to go.

    Anybody go to Manchester tonight?

  4. #4
Yes I went to Manchester. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but couldn;t make head or tail of it. I went with some proper afficianado's and they were all talking in a strange foreign language in the pub. And then I went to the election count.

No real video here, but the song is titanic!

Fantastic show tonight. As I had hoped, the set list was the same as the NA shows.

Marillion drummer Ian Mosley made Marillion manager Lucy Jordache go with him.

He made her? I wonder what she thought of it.

My wife went with me (of her own accord) and, despite not really knowing the music beyond bits I have played around the house and not being a prog fan in general, said she really enjoyed it. She commented on how good she thought the drummer and the bassist were in particular.

I wish I had seen that Manchester gig advertised.

Does anyone have any links to sites that collate bands playing in a particular area of genre?

How are people finding out about this? Even Googling this gig brings up very little.

As it happens, I found out about the two UK shows on this site but it was buried in a Magma thread that pre-dated the announcement and I only saw it because I was already following the thread. I think it got a mention in the 'gigs' sub-forum on Prog Archives but I'm not sure how comprehensive that is usually as it depends on someone bothering to post a thread for a particular gig.

Here's my review of Magma at Cadogan Hall in London, published at The Progressive Aspect:-

I was at the Cadogan Hall last night - absolutely fantastic show. This was my second time seeing them (after 2009 also in London), and while the last gig was great as well I enjoyed this a lot more, thanks to the inclusion of classics like Kohntarkosz and MDK (being more familiar with Slag Tanz also helped - it really is a great piece). Can't really add much to the review above. Vander and Bussonnet are marvellous together, loved McGaw's manic solo in Kohntarkosz and the singers really impressed as well.
Really hope we won't have to wait another 6 years for another Kobaian visit to the UK.

Cadogan Hall was one of the best shows I've seen them play (8th time for me, if we're counting Offering in 1988 as Magma). My one minor gripe is that it would've been nice to see the Fender Rhodes guy branch out from the "water carrier" role occasionally, but that's a very minor criticism.

A valid point as he was the only one who concentrated on textures all the time. He's a recent recruit though so maybe that will change in time

Who was on keys, Ternoy or Ruder? Never mind- Ternoy, right? Bruno sits in when Jeremie has another gig with his own band.

Very nice review, thank you. That was my first time seeing Magma and I loved it. Such a great experience to be carried away by the music.

Was really struck by the way that in Magma everyone becomes part of the rhythm section! And Christian reminded me more of Elvin Jones than any rock drummer. Incredible voice he still has, too.

I think Stella introduced him as Bruno Ruder, which made me wonder as I thought they had a different keyboard player now. I guess Ternoy was otherwise engaged then.

That would make sense, as Ruder was on Rhodes when they played Le Triton last Tuesday. We got a different setlist though, with "Riah Sahiltaahk" followed by "MDK" and "Slag Tanz". I was a little disappointed they didn't play "Kohntarkosz", but since they'd played the entire 2nd trilogy when they played Le Triton last November, it was probably deemed better to play an entirely different set of material.

Ruder left the band in December 2011, but he has returned on various occasions since. When they played the augmented "orchestral" gigs in 2012, Ruder came back since he was more familiar with that material & arrangements, and in 2013 he played a one-off show that had Jannick Top on bass for the whole show since Bussonnet was busy with Electric Epic.

Having done some investigation I think you're right and it was Bruno Ruder

I think I was alerted to the gigs by Songkick. Actually a really useful service if you let it pillage your data, has meant me picking up on a bunch of things I otherwise would have missed.

Thanks, good to know. He did the last London gig as well and it looked like a different guy to me, but then that was 6 years ago.

Love Songkick. It's a great way of keeping track of gigs in my area. They also do tickets for some gigs, and are usually the cheapest option.

Ruder sits in when Jeremie Ternoy has to do his own gigs with his jazz band.

True, but I can understand your disappointment- having seen the kohntarkosz trilogy I can only imagine what MDK would sound like in this constelation, and to have it all in one night including slag tanz- I think smoke would come out of my brain

Here's a snippet of MDK from Cadogan Hall. Not brilliant quality but I still wish it went on longer...
