    SNL 40th Anniversary Show

The 3 hour spectacle is on tonite. 7-8 PM EST is Red Carpet special, and the show is a long 3.5 hours from 8 - 1130.

Last night the very first episode with George Carlin, Janis Ian and Billy Preston was on. The format was only like that once, stage went into the audience and George Carlin was basically a stand up comedian during the whole show. Preston's synthesizer playing was caught front and center on camera, awesome.

Wish I could stay home and watch it, but I have to work tonight. I've been watching some of the reruns of the 70's era shows on VH-1 Classic. For awhile, I was tuning in a for a few of them from the 90's and 80's, but they had those edited down to an hour, with all of the musical guests edited out! You see the musical guest in the opening credits, and then you see them during the closing credits (and possibly in some of the skits), and that's it.

But for whatever reason, the ones from the 70's they've shown appear to be fully intact, or at least more intact than any rerun I've ever seen. I just watched last night the Christmas 76 episode with Zappa (including the Samurai Jazz Musician bit), and I have the Sun Ra episode on the DVR. Why can't they air this stuff all the time, instead of just the relatively mediocre stuff from the 90's onwards?!

Really looking forward to this. They are bringing back just about every cast member who has ever been in the show (and is still alive) along with a bunch of classic musical guests. It is all happening live too. They have been keeping pretty tight lipped on exactly who will be there and what they are going to do, but I think it is going to be cool.

Same here. It was awesome. I love '70s SNL. I also love the cast that featured Myers, Farley, Spade, Nealon, Sweeney, Meadows, Sweeney, Schneider, and yes, even Sandler (though he's enjoyed the most post-SNL fame, all the others are better).

They've been playing archival footage all week, and I've caught some of it.

Is it just me, or were they a lot funnier and more daring in the 1970s?

Yeah, at some point Lorne just stopped taking chances. Last great cast was that Phil Hartman/Carvey/Myers/etc as pointed out above.

I'll throw this on the DVR. We've got the Walking Dead/Downton Abbey tonight. I think this reunion special is going to be about 65% filler. I do wonder what Bill Murray is going to do. He's sure to do something other than play it safe.

Also caught first episode last night. I remembered Carlin's routines nearly verbatim. 40 years ago, amazing. Tonight should be a ton of laughs. Guarantee if Tracy Morgan shows he gets the most applause.

I went to school with the big black guy who played one of the brass instruments in the band early on (I forget which instrument). Sadly, he (the guy I went to school with) died a few years ago. He was a very nice kid.

I'm not a HUGE SNL fan, but it certainly gave us something to do when home on Saturday night. And when the Rolling Stones were on at one point (at least) and especially Steve Martin doing King Tut, it gave us teens something to talk about and laugh about. And 40 years of anything is an accomplishment.

Saw bits of last nights first episode.

The hot rumor is that tonight's show will feature the reunion of N'Sync. That's huge, if it happens! I will be watching.

I still record and watch SNL every week (or at least, every time a new one is on). I sometimes really enjoy it still, although it's a prime candidate for DVR as there is a lot to skip.... the loads of commercials, the musical guest (almost always), and any time the opening sketch is about U.S. politics, which is a lot of the time. I watch each 90-minute episode in about a half an hour.

Weekend Update has really sucked since the departure of Seth Meyers, and Tina Fey before him. The current pair is about the worst the show has ever had. I do think there are some strong cast members though, and as always, several that get so little air time, I wonder why they are even on the show. Vanessa Bayer is my current favourite, I think she's quite funny.

As for this 40th anniversary show, I look forward to it, but again: prime candidate for skipping loads of stuff. For one thing, I don't need to see the same old ancient sketches they trot out every time they do a retrospective.

Yup, I agree. The current cast has some very talented people in it. As always SNL has up and down years, but they have maintained a pretty strong track record for the most part. I still like it. I don’t watch it every week, but still catch it fairly regularly.

Jim Carrey asking where Brian Williams is on the red carpet special just now. Instant classic moment!!

So why have Miley Cirus sing "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" when Paul Simon is actually there in the building? She actually did a pretty good job with it, but just seems wierd...

Because she puts more meaning to:

You just slip out the back, Jack
    Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
    Just get yourself free
    Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
    And get yourself free

Kind of surprised they gave MacDonald as much screen time as they did tonight. He got fired back in the day, but i always thought his humor was a bit ahead of its time.

Just got done watching it. I've been a big SNL fan for a long time. I don't think I ever not watched it for very long even during the low points. Tonight's special was very good. I don't always like the music guests that much but aside from that it's an iconic show.

I never knew Norm Mcdonald was fired. I wonder why that happened.
