    Canterbury Binge 2015

OK, almost 2015. I've been doing this for at least 5 years now, maybe more. I'll probably cheat and occasionally toss some cardiacs and classical in there, otherwise its gotta reek of a Kentish odor if you're gonna spin it. Who's in?

    Already spun:

    Soft Machine I
    Soft Machine Vol. 2
Hatfield - Rotters Club (the GREATEST album ever made. It's fact, not opinion).

With any luck, in 2015, you'll be able to see the movie (Romantic Warriors III - I saw a very early 'rough cut' screened for critiques last weekend) and read the book (Aymeric's history in two volumes, which is actually really supposed to drop in 2015).

I really dug Syd Arthur's sophomore effort (which I picked up after seeing them open for Yes earlier this year), which has a distinctly Canterbury flavor. I like what I've heard from Schnauser (sp?) and will be looking to pick up some of their Canterbury-inflected tunage.

Well enough. But what about, er, actual Canterbury scene stuff?

Had me another one-man Christmas holiday (when I wasn't at work, that is), and played a LOT of Canterbury; Egg, Mole, Quiet Sun, Hoppertunity Box, The Haples Child, "Facelift" (version from Third) at full blast (and I blame that fucker for pretty much taking out my last tolerable speaker), Ruth/Richard, Space Shanty, debut Gilgamesh, Before a Word is Said, and then one of my fave "loner's song" records, the strangely rare Rough Trade mini-LP compilation 1982-84 by Wyatt (with "Shipbuilding", "Amber and Amberines" etc.).

Neighbours are mostly people in their 20s or early 30s in my apartment building, so they usually still run on home to their mums and dads in the holidays. They're probably just as happy losing out on my Canterbury binge. If they'd been home I'd given them "Fletcher's Blemish".

Hatfield and the North's two records are my favorites.

Complete and the Missing Pieces by National Health get a lot of play with me too.

But one that I don't here many people talk about: Richard Sinclair's Caravan of Dreams. What a beautiful record. "Keep on Caring" is great

Oh but it's pretty darn close.

Back when I started listening to progressive rock music (in the 80s, mind you - and I STILL don't like much "neo"), I took in the lot - symph, Zeuhl, proto, post-psych/acid prog, Kraut, electronic/cosmic, advanced folk-rock, avant-progressive (w/wo the RIO-quotient), RPI... and Canterbury. It was almost ALL about collecting music that was found at the secondhand dealer's retail, so in the burgeoning days of vinyl death there was a sheer *abundance* to pick from. Practically without exception, one of very few acts that stuck with everyone I knew who went through this phase - was Hatfield and the North. There was a musical, aesthetic, artistic and emotional dimension to their recipe that set it apart from just about everything else. I still think they were among the 5-10 finest bands of all time, and definitely in terms of the 'p'.

I beat that new Schauser into the ground already. Damn I love that one... and on the first listen too. Rare for me to love something right out the gate.

That's one I was overjoyed to get on CD when it finally came out. I wish I had the latest signed one... but I got the Egg - Metronomical signed already so I was ok without it I guess.

Oh ya... if you don't have Copious Notes - The inside story of Egg, Uriel, Arzachel & The Ottawa Company --- you really need to get your hands on it and read it. Lovely.

One of the best books too (by Jonathan Coe). I also enjoyed the BBC-series, although the sound-track should have had more Canterbury-stuff.

Just got a note about that rough cut. Lucky you.

Would be great if Aymeric's work would finally be released. Must be his life's work. I remember he spoke of it more than 10 years ago.

Excellent news on both fronts, now if only Sid will get the updated version of his KC book out I'll be set for reading matter.

What's the sound quality on this one like? I'm sorely tempted but been a bit disappointed by some of the archival releases.

Arzachel is a small studio recording. The recording is more than adequate.

I personally think the music is not up to the standards set by these musicians on their other projects of the same-ish time period.

it has more to do with proximity to the film-makers (they are locals).

I'll have to agree, although the record starts out pretty well with those first two tracks. But by the time you reach the "Metempsychosis" 16+ minutes of less-than-convincing quasi-druginduced free form closer, there's an imminent impression of, uh, immaturity.
