Changes Near - The Quarter After.

Second album by a California band highly influenced by Notorious-Byrd-Bros.-era Byrds and Moby Grape. Loads of jingle-jangle Rickenbacker and swaths of Mellotron here and there.

Walt, that particular CD features several neo-classical style pieces which brings Stravinsky and Hindemith to mind. Balada uses a lot of winds, brass, and percussion, which I enjoy. The viola concerto is the most recent piece, but I haven't listened to it yet.

PS After another listen, I'm really enjoying all of the works. They're all different and engaging. Will look into some of the other CDs in the near future.

Recently i've been getting into the music of Mexican composer Carlos Chavez (1899-1978) on two cd's of his chamber works.Chavez had an ear for percussion and included percussion instruments in many of his compositions. He wrote concertos, string quartets, pieces for guitar, the whole gamut. The piece i'm posting is for four flutes and percussion. This piece is on Vol3 of a four volume set of Chavez's chamber works on Cambria records.(this performance is not the one of the Cambria cd).I have Vol 3 and 4 of this set.

I can't believe I've never listened to the quintet before. What a great piece of music! That CD is is out of print.
I'm gonna try the Naxos recording, because it also includes another great piece entitled Die Gluckliche Hand
    which I don't have.

Yeah, that was the only affordable copy, so good thing you snagged it! There's not that many recordings of the quintet, and from what I've read, the London Sinfonietta is one of the better performances.

The Arkiv site is a great source for reviews and recording info. Just keep in mind that out of print titles sold at sites including Arkiv and Presto Classical are manufactured on demand CD-Rs. They claim that they're a better quality silver coated version, but a CD-R it is. I'm not sure about the CDs they're selling through Amazon?
