    CAKE (No Fork Required)

OK, until tonight I somehow missed these guys for the past 15 years or so.

I just finished watching AXS TV's Guitar Center Sessions with Cake.

These guys are very good musically, and also extremely intelligent, sarcastic and clever with their lyrics.

Think I'm popping for their 2011 cd and see if I should go further back.

    Any Cake fans/experts here?

I like some of their songs particularly "going the distance." I borrowed a cd from the library once which I'm pretty sure was the album with that track on it and to be honest it wasn't that good. I like their use of trumpet though. If they have a best of or compilation I would spring for that first but of course it's entirely up to you.

The first thing I checked for was a "best of". Not happening, so I went for "Showroom Of Compassion" (2011).

The trumpet is great. I love when IZZ uses it.

I dig them. The bass player really makes it. I like the trumpet too, you don't get that in pop rock much. I like their album Prolonging The Magic best. It's the one with the pig on it. The others are good as well, but I think they struck the best balance on that one.

Not an expert at all, but this, IMO, is one of the ultimate cover versions of any song by anyone:

Every disc is worthy of a spin. They are a truly unique band with a truly unique sound. Pop for them all. Especially Nugget.

Comfort Eagle, get that one. Showroom is pretty good.

My friends and I really liked these guys around the late 90s. Good band that I had kind of forgotten about!

My old pal Paulie and miamiscot have virtually strong-armed me into ordering Fashion Nugget as well.

I thought this was going to be either another thread about MacArthur Park, or the Crowded House song "Chocolate Cake".

    Steve,

How can you continue to force feed your brain more enjoyable music? In order to keep my pleasure senses working in my brain, I have had to eliminate NFL football, commercial television, and pizza.

Have you been to a physical therapist (a/k/a a "provider" or "escort"), Bob?

You should be able to get the help you need there.

Oh, and they played with Bread.

Humble Pie and Mom's Apple Pie should reunite and do a show with Magic Pie.

I never gave them a chance even though I work with 2 fanatics who talk them up all of the time. My issue was I heard only 1 song and it was their cover of War Pigs. This song has been covered by everyone and their version is the only one I found to be awful.

I loved these guys when I was a kid. I always associated them with Soul Coughing though outside of the vocals and a tendency to get pegged as "alt-rock" they aren't very alike. I like 'em up to Comfort Eagle; those first four albums are all worth a spin. I tried real hard to like Pressure Chief and it just wasn't happening. Their latest, Showroom, is not all that good either. I've forgotten every tune on it minus "Sick of You" which is good but is basically an amalgam of every Cake hit thus far. Not a good thing as Cake rely massively on their hooks!!

Pressure Chief was a bit of a departure for them but still pretty cool. Showroom Of Compassion, on the other hand, is a total miss.

    And I love Soul Coughing!!!
