    New Music From Dennis DeYoung

First song from his forthcoming new album:

DeYoung previously announced this will be his last album but added an update: "This was supposed to be my final album but there were so many songs written that Serafino Perugino, CEO of Frontiers, suggested dividing it into two albums rather than one. So be it. This is Volume 1, which sounds pretentious to me, but the marketing folks wanted you to know there are going to be two of them, so hey kids, there are two of them; this is Volume 1."

It all started when Jim Peterik, a fellow Chicagoan and nearby neighbor, sent a song demo to Dennis.

"If not for Jim Peterik’s encouragement, talent and prodding I would not have recorded this music", said DeYoung. "He once told me that the world needed my music; to which I replied 'have the world text me for verification.' We collaborated from the get go, happily and seamlessly and at this time we have written 9 songs together of which five will be on Volume 1. Just two Chicago guys doing what they do best, making music and having a laugh.”

The collaboration with Julian Lennon came about when DeYoung wrote a verse and chorus of a song with Lennon in mind. Lennon heard the demo and said he would be honored to participate. Lennon's vocals were recorded in October at Mission Sound in Brooklyn, NY.

DeYoung shares: "The moment we sang together in the studio it felt magical. I wrote the song specifically for our two voices. I had never met Julian previously but I have been an admirer since Valotte."

The album title 26 East represents the birthplace of Styx. 26 E 101st Place was the address where DeYoung grew up in Roseland, on the south side of Chicago. Across the street at 39 E 101st Place lived the Panozzo twins, Chuck and John, whom would go on to form Trade Winds in 1962, which a decade later would become the core of Styx. The cover artwork of 26 East features three locomotives, representing the three original members of Styx leaving the Chicago train yard dreaming of bigger and better things.

    Tracklisting:

    "East Of Midnight"
    "With All Due Respect"
    "A Kingdom Ablaze"
    "You My Love"
    "Run For The Roses"
    "Damn That Dream"
    "Unbroken"
    "The Promise Of This Land"
"To The Good Old Days" (duet with Julian Lennon)
    "A.D. 2020"

Interesting. I used to see Jim Peterik with his Ides Of March band when he would play festivals and concerts in suburban Chicago in the late 90's and early 2000's. Good songwriter and his ongoing association with DeYoung should make this a fun listen.

I like it. His last album was one of the best solo albums he has ever done IMO.

Yeah, it was excellent. The title track duet with the gravelly voiced French fellow is possibly my favourite Dennis solo tune.

Looking forward to the new album. If the above track is anything to go by, it'll be another good 'un.

I am very impressed with that one song. Dennis sounds great. I'll have to check out his last solo album,
Eric: "What the hell Hutch, it's all Rush, what if we wanted a little variety?"

Hutch: "Rush is variety, Bitch! Rule number one: in my van, its Rush! All Rush, all the time...no exceptions."

    From "Fanboys" 2009.

Totally agree. It has that classic Styx sound for sure.

This is his song with Julian Lennon:

Great new honest interview with Dennis from Rolling Stone:

    https://www.rollingstone.com/music/m...-roboto-968709

He talks a lot about the new record, getting Julian Lennon on board, some politics, and quite a bit about his relationship with Styx, and his desire for Styx to get into the R&R Hall of Fame.

    This is an interesting excerpt:

RS: They (Styx) still bash that song ("Mr. Roboto"), though. Aren’t you tired of hearing that?

DeYoung: They’re doing that while they’re playing it! Look, when J.Y. and Tommy and myself were the only ones left in the band, I got really sick. And I’m still carrying the scars of that Influenza A I got. I still have light sensitivity. It doesn’t go away.

They wanted to assume control, the two of them. And need I say there’s an increase of a third of the money as well? They wanted the power to do that and they did it. But you can’t tell your fan base we got rid of this load over here because he was sick and couldn’t go on tour when we wanted him to, so they came up with this story that they’ve told for 20 years.

They said in 1999 that the reason they had to replace me was because of something that happened in 1983. And we’d just done two successful reunion tours in 1996 and 1997 and we were recording a new album! But if you tell a lie long enough and with enough enthusiasm, people are going to believe it. And I didn’t respond right away because I was sick. They wanted to tell that story: “If you didn’t like ‘Mr. Roboto,’ which apparently tens of millions of people disagree with, he’s to blame.”

Here’s what they don’t understand and I’ll say this on the record: All boats rise with the tide. Styx fans were not in a contest to see which member they liked best. They liked the band. Most of them loved the variety.

...i hope we don't have to wait another 10 years for part 2?

forget a Styx reunion, it will never happen. too much hate and resentment.
what a shame that so many bands end up this way.

Thanks for the interview Dan. I particularly liked this line:

"Simply put, Rush inducted Yes. But there is no Rush without Yes. Led Zeppelin and Yes made a baby, it was Rush."

Makes me giddy like a young child.

The Real Music Observer has a good breakdown of this interview in the following segment:

He seems to come across as really cool and mostly right. There's probably some skeleton in the Styx closet that keeps him out but really, he's not asking for the name - maybe a little of the money but if you put him in the band they go from playing casino's to arenas and that shouldn't be a hindrance.

One last hoorah with the remaining guys, give the fans a helluva show, make some cash, play all the damn songs and then let it be.

I'm trying to find what's keeping this from happening. They don't even have to hang out with each other as we've seen over the years that guys can not be friends but still get on stage and rock.

They caved to the fans and are playing Roboto so WTF?

Just also want to add Styx has gotten a short shrift over the years. I'll get up off my seat any day for Renegade or Blue Collar Man and put my fist happily in the air(possible air drums might be included, especially for BCM) and I still don't think songs like Lady or Babe are bad. There's a little bit of cheese there but who doesn't have cheddar in their catalog?

Waste of time. No need to breakdown the interview. Just read it. It’s a pretty good read.

    og?
The current version of Styx has been together for 20 years now. I think they just feel they are their own band and don't want to go backwards. Unless they have a falling out with Gowan at some point, I don't see this re-union thing ever happening.

I actually prefer Gowan-led Styx. The current line up is a powerful live act. Moreoever, Styx's last album with Gowan, The Mission, is excellent.
What can this strange device be? When I touch it, it brings forth a sound (2112)

Tangentially related... I just stumbled on this. Just... WOW! How in the hell does he still sound like he did 40+ years ago?! Great orchestration, too, and the choir is pretty special as well.

I agree with both points. The current band is a well oiled live machine, and "The Mission" ranks right up with the best albums the band has ever done IMO.

    finally downloaded it on itunes.
been listening to it for almost a week and i'm very pleased how good it is.
the songs are really strong and the production really showcases it.
i think it's better then his 2009 album. look forward to volume 2, hopefully later this year.
i also downloaded the track Proof Of Heaven with Jim Peterik.
it fits right at home with the other songs.
Dennis is 80 now, great album.

Good to hear the feedback on it. I’m in for the physical cd.

Also - Dennis is 73 (and looks & sounds great for his age) - not quite 80 yet.
