yeah looking them up neither of their singles charted all that high. I remember "U.G.L.Y." from when I was in middle school. I didn't know they were like, an actual group...I thought it was some Disney Channel thing. the bottling thing at Reading got a lot of play over here too. I remember people being split between "who the hell would chuck projectiles at teenage girls?" and "didn't they deserve it though?"

looks like the acts who handled this sort of thing the best were Daphne & Celeste, Andrew W.K., and Justin Bieber. coincidentally the three best artists of 2018.

No particular order- My Sweet 17 albums from 2018...So far.
Pinoil - "Bran Coucou" Two French bands fuse in the best way possible. A raucous refreshing RIO melee.
Galahad- "Seas of Change" One 45 minute emotional epic observation on Brexit. My wife's favorite from 2018.
Kayak- "Seventeen" Dutch Masters release 17th and possibly best Kayak album ever!
Fire- "The Hands" - Slow burn jazz fusion, rusty masterpiece could give you lockjaw.
Sisare- "Leaving the Land" Opeth Pale Communion's Finnish kissing cousin.
3rdegree- "Ones and Zeros: Vol.0" Prequal to 2015's "Ones and Zeros: Vol.1" ... Vol 0 captures the essence of society's relationship with social media and the internet: Clickbait, trolls, likes, avatars, and the unintended consequences of social media obsession.
Tusmørke - "Fjernsyn I Farver" I can't enough of Tusmørke's brand of Prog Folk. Wobbler Keyboardist joins the fray.
Sonar With David Torn- "Vortex" Swiss band's best and most original textured fabric, torn from two "three string guitars" sonar ricochet off Cyclopean architecture cut and constructed by multiple interlocking odd time signatures. Primary composer Stephan Thelen's career as a mathematician, reinforces a polymath approach complex yet simplistic as an exotic Swiss timepiece.
Gleb Kolyadin- "Gleb Kolyadin" Pianist from Iamthemorning solo venture with: Gavin Harrison on drums; Nick Beggs on bass; Theo Travis (Robert Fripp / Porcupine Tree / Steven Wilson) on flute and saxophone; Steve Hogarth, alongside Mick Moss (Antimatter); and Jordan Rudess on keys.
Calibro 35 - "Decade" Playful, Jazz Fusion,1970-1975 cinema funksploitation FUN!
Roz Vitalis - "The Hid Den Man of the Heart" Keyboardist Ivan Rozmainsky composes a mature collection of melodic, exotic chamber prog utilizing guitar, drums, flute, trumpets, mandolin, bass clarinet, percussion and other familiar instruments in unfamiliar ways. If I could only eat a meal that tastes like this...
Bomber Goggles- "Gyreland" What a great name for a band! Catchy ecological-peacenik hippy concept album- Social justice idealists build a floating island nation out of plastic trash drifting across the ocean. But wait! Big Brother barges in, wanting to wet his beak in the oceanic plastic paradise. What happens next? I won't tell.
Una Stagione all 'Inferno- "Il Mostro Di Firenze Gothic folky Argento like serial killer concept album.
Alchem- "Viaggio All Centro Della Terra" Gothic, metal, RPI prog. Cocteau Twins kisses Blood Ceremony full on the lips.
Armonite - "And the Stars Above" Classically trained "Jacopo Bigi / violin, viola" and "Paolo Fosso / keyboards" and Porcupine Tree bassist Colin Edwin experiment smashing classical music, jazz, and rock in a prog cyclotron. Sparse vocals employed like keys or wind instruments.
Ranest Rane- "A Space Odyssey Final Part Starchild" Italians "Ranest Rane" final take on 2001- Space Odyssey trilogy. My favorite of the five Ranest Rane albums channeling classic cinema.
The Samurai Of Prog - Archiviarum Another great album. Beautiful job of album art and packaging. The breathtaking consistency makes "Samurai of Prog" an autobuy for me.

I can understand that as well. I don't think their cover of "Kandy Korn" could (or should) surpass the original -- but it is a fun alternative, IMO, when the mood strikes.

A new Our Solar System album out for the best part of two months and I have to find out about it whilst bumbling around on Discogs?
I haven't heard much from 2018 yet (the joys of living in China), but of what I have heard, the outstanding release for me this year so far has been Weedpecker III - an absolute MARVEL of an album:
This year's two Umphrey's McGee releases should be waiting for me at home when I return to the UK in just over a week - looking forward to finally hearing them and will relay thoughts on this thread!
Both previous suggestions seem particularly interesting after a first skim-over...
Will certainly investigate further.

My vinyl is at the post office. I listened to some 3 minutes of this at YT and didn't need anymore to order.

Are there any somewhat/relatively new bands that are an auto-must-buy and that most everyone agrees on?
I remember when Moth Vellum came out - it was touted by everyone. Same for Magenta, and 3, and Big Big Train, and Flying Colors, and Haken, and Izz, and Magic Pie, and Sound of Contact, and etc. I'm looking for a new band like that - not some obscure hidden group that only a few know about, but something truly special.
Any rec's on the next potential great thing?

A gentleman is defined as someone who knows how to play the accordion, and doesn't.
Nothing personal, and no offense intended, but if you think the bands you listed are truly special, you're probably going to get a limited number of responses, as those bands won't be "touted by everyone." I think you'd get more recs for bands that have little in common with them, in fact.
I think Perfect Beings are excellent. Not sure if you've heard them. What about White Willow?
