Thread: Minimalist Jazz Rock

Sha's Feckel - an off-shoot of Ronin are super...

There's also a Sonar off-shoot called Akku Quintet who are producing great sounds...

And I love this new album from Thymeshift called Beyond Horizons

  2. #27
Err, sorry not sure how I laid them out like that but you get the idea.

I really like this style but I must say Nik Bartch has a definite edge compared to the rest of the pack
There is an extra dimension to his music that makes me go back for more were the rest usually impress but the impression usually wears off after repeated listening

IMHO the live Bartch album is a great start...

One of my favorite Belgian jazz groups has some pretty fender-bendy stuff on a few albums (hard to find clips):

I rarely recommend a Live album as an entry point but in the case of Nik Bartsch it is certainly a good place to go.

I blame Wynton, what was the question?

Although not really a minimalist jazz-rock band on the first couple of albums from Spaced Out Antoine Fafard always played a kind of tribute to Philip Glass.

My understanding is that The Necks were one of the originators of this style and current practitioners include Nik Bartsch Ronin, Brandt Brauer Frick, Sonar, Dawn Of Midi.

    Thoughts on this style?
From your description, I thought that it doesn't sound like my cup of tea, but I decided to check out those first three videos. Sorry to say, I was right. I actually did think several of those patterns were pretty interesting in and of themselves, but imo, they never went anywhere, at least not anywhere I would've liked to see them go. I'm not knocking the style or anybody's appreciation of it; it just doesn't resonate with my particular tastes. I generally tend towards music that's more like an action movie, with twists, turns and big surprises (though certainly not everything I listen to is like that) and I'm not too fond of repetition for the most part. But that's just me, of course! I wasn't aware of this genre and even if it's not anything I want to explore further, I did find it mildly interesting, so thanks for that! And... you did ask!

Glad to read they scratched your itch. I have also discovered some new bands through the recommendations in this thread. I was not familiar with The Necks before and really enjoy them. Great thread idea.

If you don't like that one then they're probably not for you, I do find them fairly polarizing. That's probably their best album and the other two are a similar style.

    Stop copying everything I buy

If you just filled up your car with 93 octane then this is getting creepy and I might have to call the authorities. Or do you guys still ride horses down in West Virginia?
