Los Angeles, CA - Lakshminarayana Shankar, professionally known as L. Shankar, is widely considered a living legend, a pioneer, and a musical genius who has collaborated with giants such as Frank Zappa, Peter Gabriel, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna and many, many more. His solo albums have always drawn not only enormous interest from fans and critics alike but also showcase the collaborative spirit that is integral to Shankar’s art. Musicians, singers, visionaries, both known and obscure, have all come to pay tribute to this uniquely talented musician and perhaps even find new inspiration for themselves by performing on his recordings. That tradition continues on Shankar’s new single “In My Heart,” which features the talents of groundbreaking artist Jonathan Davis, lead singer of alt-metal icons Korn, as well as Jane’s Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins, Fishbone’s Norwood Fisher, Scott Page renowned saxophonist from Supertramp and Pink Floyd and others. This is the first single from Shankar's newest full-length album Chepleeri Dream that also features guest performances from King Crimson’s Tony Levin, Chester Thompson (Phil Collins / Genesis / Frank Zappa), Dileep Palakkad, and more! Shankar shares this about the album, “I was so inspired to work on this album and to have many great musicians involved with this project. The songs reflect upon my experience living at Chepleeri Temple in Kerala when there was a major disaster, floods which destroyed Kerala and I had to over come all the obstacles to get this project finished. It was truly a challenge and I love challenges. It gives me strength.”

I'm a huge L. Shankar fan of decades starting with 1980's "Who's to Know' which I still love. However if the "In My Heart" single is any indication of the album, I will definitely pass I'm sorry to say.

"Who's to know" is a classical Indian music album whereas this website is for "21st century Progressive rock" and that is what Chepleeri dreams is about. So I think you are in the wrong place to begin with. This single is amazing too, just not your taste maybe. Besides if you are a fan of Shankar's you would know that his style is always eclectic and out of the box. He has songs in a wide range of music genres to his credit. A memorable artist always creates music that inspires them and as a fan it'd would be nice to trust the artists' musical genius.

I have appreciated his eclecticism and collaborations over the years, he's had a great run since the 70's, he's now a septuagenarian and has clearly run out of creative steam. Based on the track, it's not at all clear that he is still able to perform at the level he once did.

I'll trust my ears rather than sheepishly defer to someone else's "musical genius" thank you. If you're in Mylapore, you are lucky enough to attend great concerts at the Madras Music Academy and should be able to discern extraordinary music from the prosaic and pallid fare offered in "In My Heart". If not, it is possible that it is you who are the wrong place.

You are right. I have attended 'great' concerts at the academy; attended them long enough to know that the performers learn and play the SAME music, generations after generations with little to no creativity. I also attended all of Shankar's concerts this music season. I can tell you nothing has impeded Shankar's creative steam, it is quite the opposite. His performances were as fiery as ever if not anything more. He is as much an Indian musician as he has ever been. His performances were very well-received, one even had his colleagues on stage in tears!He is much revered. It is VERY CLEAR that he is able to perform at the same level like he did before. It looks like his thinking is just too forward for 'some people'(read: you) to understand.

I'll take a moment to spell it out for you: It does not make any sense to compare traditional Indian music and rock! You just cannot compare Who's to know with Chepleeri Dreams. You CANNOT comment on a musicians' calibre based on two completely different albums. (Especially when you are clearly only pleased to listen to albums like "Who's to know" why even bother listening to rock?)

To be able to see someone create and perform different genres of music that is respected by corresponding contemporaries is such a breath of fresh air. It is a great reminder to musicians to be courageous enough to explore new music and defy expectations of having to perform what people 'expect' you to perform. Such an effort should be celebrated. The reason that all the music greats featured in his album worked with him must ONLY be because of the respect they have for him and his WORK. If they think this music is progressive rock enough, IT MAKES SENSE TO TRUST THEIR YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD OVER YOUR HUMBLE AMATEUR OPINION.

Shankar has many albums for his Indian music fans and World music fans alike, we are all entitled to listen to what we like, sure!, but not entitled to judge a musician's capabilities from it. The single "In my heart" is great and "Chepleeri Dreams" is going to be a great album. I encourage people to listen to it.
