I have been listening to the original 1972-1975 soundtrack to The Price Is Right nonstop lately. Seriously. Sounds like Rascal Repo Reporters circa Happy Accidents covering Hatfield on a cruise ship. Love it.

It took about 10 good listens before I 'got' that first Hatfield album. Now I love it!

Hatfield’s first is such a colorful concoction...great tunes, great playing…just an awesome record!

Yup, this was the one I had in mind as well. Very underrated, I think - but a darn fine avant-jazz record from basically "jazz-rock" musicians. I remember getting this from the same CD bin where I got Repertoire's wonderful issue of Gilgamesh's Another Fine Tune, and realizing how incredibly diverse musical thinkers they were, Hopper and Gowen - as these are truly different creations. I suppose Elton Dean had a significant say on the Soft Heap recordings at this point.Revisiting this one. And digging it!

Although this is olde news for most of you, but its pretty official that I think The Rotters Club is the greatest 'rawk' album ever made. It probably isn't, but I sure think it is and it is numero uno on my chart. I can't stop playing it, and I believe every nano-second of that album is masterfully written, played, produced, etc etc etc. The overall Canterbury vibe with colorful polka dots floating about in wispy pink smoke that it emanates is just off the flippin' chart for me. The weird part is that I am not on the fanatical level of the Chick Corea early RtF type jazzy sound (but I do enjoy that stuff for the record), but the jazzy bits that sort of parallel that particular sonic landscape is just pure magic on this one. Its the combination of the individual players strengths and quirks that just add up to one glorious bastard. LOVE LOVE this album. Fuckin LOVE it.
That's cool - I don't include "outside" Canterbury when I binge on this stuff, but of course you can make up 'yer own rules
Thanks! And YES!!! One of two absolute masterpieces - these are ultra-desert island records if any such thing exists. The chemistry and collective creativity that was formed with these four cats is frankly one of the most beautiful musical conglomerations that I know of. I mean were talking on the level of Miles' second great quintet, Bill Evans trio with LaFaro, FZ's Roxy band, you name it.....for my money Hatfield is right up there, no questions asked. A gem.
Its a killer for sure - the "Backwards" section on this is one of the pristine moments in all of Canterbury history - Sinclair's fuzzy wuzzy organ solo is absolute gold.
I'd say the same thing happened with me as well. I definitely liked it straight away, but once these two albums started to sink in, that was it. We're talking Cardiacs-level love here
I also used to think that the National Health albums were superior, but these days don't ask me which band I prefer because you might not like the answer
