Interesting thread! That Tirill tune was particularly beautiful! I liked Bat For Lashes too; the tune didn't slay me, but her voice did and that female drummer was laying down a most compelling groove!

"My girl'" in the contemporary female singer/songwriter/musician realm is Imogen Heap. The first time I ever heard her name and got a small taste of what she does was on this "live in the studio" video; just a girl singing, clapping her hands and building layers with a couple of loopers:

I went out and bought her album "Speak For Yourself" after that and from the very first track, I realized that that live video barely scratched the surface of what this classically trained pianist/expert synth programmer/orchestrator and ProTools whiz could do. LOVE her!

re- kiki dee ... she always struck me as sort of a dusty springfield for the 70s and 80s, but there’s definitely more to her than the “tags along with elton” label. this song just oozes class, despite being somewhere along the halfway mark to ABBA, late-period-ELO and show tunes – great number:

dusty. now we’re heading somewhere.

Fave Kiki Dee album is her 1977 self-titled release produced by EJ and Clive Franks:

She was one of the 60s backing vocalist studio rats alongside the aforementioned Dusty, the Chanter Sisters (who wrote “Star”), Madeline Bell, Lesley Duncan et al.

Lesley Duncan had an Elton John connection, in that he covered her “Love Song.” Here’s Lesley live in 1971 singing “Chain of Love” (I’m shocked that this exists, and in such high quality!):
