One of my favourite instruments in progressive music, along with Cello. Some quick favourites, and obvious choices, Crim's Larks' Tongue, Mahavishnu Orchestra (Jerry Goodman and Jean-Luc Ponty both eras), lots of PFM.
I think Cross's contribution to Larks' Tongue is underrated. I find his playing is sublime. I have been listening to the new PFM live disc (Paper Charms) and the violin is a perfect match for the melting pot of instruments. What would MO be without Goodman/Ponty?

Unexpect -- usually -- I saw them on one of their first tours, and they couldn't figure out the violinist's sound, so there was a point in the program where he was supposed to be playing solo and at that point the vocalist said, "if we had our shit together, you'd be hearing a violin solo right now...sorry...you have to hear this, it's really good...we'll come back again". It was actually kind of hilarious, because their music is so busy otherwise, you wouldn't have been able to tell.

Whew! Keep me workin'. I've heard the bigger names but not Tin Hat or Rabbit Rabbit. I'll work my way through the YouTube clips.
Tin Hat and Rabbit Rabbit are two bands featuring Carla Khilstedt of SGM, Tin Hat are pretty edgy Avant, Rabbit Rabbit are edgy Folky.

Last I checked, violinist Karen Briggs was touring with Yanni, which if you ask me is a f$%#ing waste of her talent.

It can be annoying to listen when sometimes a violin player performs parts that are faster than they can handle well, because this causes many flat/sharp notes. Obviously happens in Live albums more often. I'd recommend Boud Deun's live CD "A General Observation" which is a very good album (and one of my top 10 albums for post-1989 prog, as I posted in the other thread) but caution: some of the violin parts in it are like this.

I wouldn't say they are used often in RIO but when they are they are usually a signature instrument.I never would have guessed.
