Don't be ridiculous. Everyone knows it has to be a GREEN Magic Marker. I mean, that's just science, right?
You don't need the bits frozen, just kept in a cool environment is enough. Most audiophiles now build temperature-controlled audio storage rooms, similar to wine cellars. CDs and LPs are stored at a consistent 55 degrees Fahrenheit with only ambient light, preferably with the works of Yanni on a steady loop. It is known.
Anyone ever heard of one of these laser turntables? Kinda takes the fun out of dropping the needle on the platter.

Green markers are only for SACD.
"Cool" environments are best for storing older jazz recordings and audio recordings of Lenny Bruce, but are not necessary for most music.
Laser turntables seem to be a bit of an overkill for reproduction, but might be good for maintaining good condition of the vinyl. The article says, "audial detail that conventional styli cannot access" which would mean that the old cutting heads track better than new high-end styli. I doubt that.
Cripes, that "article" is mostly lifted word for word from the Wikipedia article I wrote a few years ago on the Finial Laser Turntable.
Laser turntables are pricy ($10,500) and by all accounts make every LP sound like a beat up 78, unless you clean the bejesus out of them. The lasers do not push dust & dirt out of the groove like a needle does, they PLAY them as musical content.

Yoikes!
I just started experiencing a strange problem with my audio rig. I keep my Classé preamp and Parasound power amp powered on at all times. My TT and CDP are powered off. Starting yesterday, I am getting a high-pitched whine (feedback?) from both speakers. Even when I powered off the Classé, I was still getting it! The only way to stop the sound was to disconnect the balanced XLR ICs between the pre and power amps.
Now, to be honest, I did introduce a new power cord recently - for the CD Player. That was several weeks ago. Is it possible that a new, possibily defective PC could cause feedback, even if the CDP is powered off?
I haven't had a chance to troubleshoot this but I thought I would throw it out here to see if anyone has any ideas. I guess my next step will be to try connecting unbalanced RCA ICs between the two devices.
Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

Here's what I would do.
First - turn off everything for a day and let it rest.
Second - you need to methodically identify the culprit. Start with the amp, turn it on - do you hear the noise? If not move up the chain to the preamp, etc.
Third - try replacing cables, power cords, interconnect, speaker cable on the culprit and see if anything changes. If not, then it is likely something internal to that piece of equipment. If you can, borrow a replacement piece from a friend and put it in the system in the culprit's place and see if all noise is gone.
Fourth - find a reputable repair shop near you if it is something internal and not just a cable issue, or contact the manufacturer and get a technician on the line. They will likely have some idea of what the issue could be from your description of the noise.

Thanks for your suggestions, Bob. I narrowed it down to the Classé preamp. That's a pisser, but at least there is a local dealer to whom I will take it.

Stan - glad you've narrowed down your issue - good luck with getting the pre-amp sorted.
Inspired by recent discussion here and with others (Ken telling me to get a big boy table ), I've started to research upgrading my table. I've had my Rega P3-24 (with Groovetracer sub-platter, platter and counterweight upgrades, Rega Exact cart) for a few years now and think it's now the weaker end of my system. It's paired with a PrimaLuna Prologue 3 pre-amp and a McIntosh MC2505 amp, running through Aperion bookshelf speakers. I like the sound, but I think I'm ready to move on to something that can get better resolution and three dimensionality. I'd be looking in the $2k range. I tend to prefer the more classic looking rectangular tables.
What do you guys think?

Is the Classe preamp a tube unit? Sometimes tubes will begin to whine for no reason. It's an easy fix if that's all it is.
And unlike solid state, tubes have a definite lifespan so leaving it on all the time is a bad idea.
PR33 - if you think you can scrape up the dough the new VPI Prime is a true world beater. That new tonearm is world class.

No, it's solid state. I spoke to the lead tech support rep in Montreal this morning and they will fix it under warranty, even though I bought it second hand and the first owner never registered it. All it will cost me is the shipping to Montreal. He admitted that they had one previous case of a blown capacitor on the mother board that caused the same thing as what I am experiencing. So even SS components can have a limited life span!
So this is a big shoutout to Classé for treating me so well.
One of these days, I will spring for a tubed integrated amp for my upstairs system. The downstairs system is highly resolving and has tons of slam. My upstairs system is all British equipment, and so has a much more relaxed sound. I like the yin and yang of the two opposites.

Mike, I was also going to suggest you listen to a VPI. I think they have a TT in the $1500 range (Traveller?). You could put on something like a Sumiko, Ortofon or Denon cartidge for around $450 and have a sweet analogue rig.

My Carver 250 w/channel amp bought in the mid 90s is on the way out. It basically "drops out" for long stretches, and it's rare when anything can be played through to the end without incident. I'm not sure whether I should try to take it to an audio shop for repair, or just purchase a new amp. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? If purchase is the option, I likely wouldn't want to go over $2K, and power output should be in the same range as the Carver. I haven't done any looking at all yet. Does any manufacturer stand out for amplifiers? Anyone have particularly good experiences with a current model?
Could be interesting, I can't listen to do the quiz right now.

I have a Parasound Halo A21. It puts out 250W/ch into 8 ohms and 400 into 4 ohms. It's been running like a champ since I bought it in 2008. Designed in California and manufactured in Taiwan. The list in Canada back then was $2600. I have no idea what it is selling for in the US now.

Is there any difference between a CD-R burned from lossless files and the original CD in terms of sound. I mixed a compilation CD of acoustic Jethro Tull for the car but for some reason I decided to play it in the living room this morning. Sounded damn good but I wonder how something burned off a basic PC could match the quality of a "store-bought" CD.
