Following a sensational 2018 UK tour, legendary guitarist Steve Hackett has announced the release of a 2CD + Blu-Ray digipak titled 'Genesis Revisited Band & Orchestra: Live at the Royal Festival Hall' on 25th October 2019 via InsideOutMusic.

The album was recorded on 5th October 2018 at The Royal Festival Hall, London, during the 2018 Genesis Revisited Tour which fulfilled a long held ambition of Steve's: to perform the music of Genesis with a live orchestra. The concert featured Steve's regular touring band of Roger King (keyboards), Gary O'Toole (drums/percussion), Rob Townsend (saxes) with Nad Sylvan on vocals and Jonas Reingold (The Flower Kings) on bass, together with special guests John Hackett and Amanda Lehmann, and augmented by the 41-piece Heart Of England Orchestra conducted by Bradley Thachuk.

Steve commented - "It was a fantastic experience for both the band and myself to play alongside an orchestra and to feel the power of the sound this extraordinary combo created. It sounds equally compelling on both film and audio. I'm proud to release this exciting product."

The 2CD set includes tracks from Steve's time with Genesis and also from his extensive solo career. The full track-listing is:
    2CD & Blu-Ray Digipak

    Tracklisting

    CD 1:
    1. Dance On A Volcano
    2. Out Of The Body

    5. Dancing With The Moonlit Knight
    6. Blood On The Rooftops
    8. Shadow of the Hierophant
    CD 2:

    2. Afterglow
    3. Serpentine Song
    4. El Nino
    5. Supper's Ready
    6. Afterglow
    Encore:

Is there such a thing as too much live Hackett? Every tour seems to get a live release...not complaining, just saying. I of course see all the shows (we didn'tget the orchestra on this side of the pond) and buy every release! Looking forward to the Montreal show (two sold-out nights at Place Des Arts) in Sept., several nights after we see Crimson at Theatre St. Denis!

My first thought when I saw this announcement on Facebook was deja vu all over again, but after watching the trailer I think the addition of the orchestra gives this concert a different feel.
So I guess I'll be adding this to my Steve Hackett collection, plus it looks like a good one.

Agree the orchestra does add something that has me planning to buy as well.

Wondering/hoping the track list is incomplete, the numbering is off, and “Afterglow” is listed twice.

I would enjoy watching this. I don't mind supporting Steve, the most unrecognized/underapprecicated member of Genesis.
What can this strange device be? When I touch it, it brings forth a sound (2112)

Might have to finally pass on this one. All I hear is the orchestra.

I'd wait and see once it's released, it's hard, at least for me to make a judgement as to the orchestra's overall mix based on the trailer.
I've noticed on other band/orchestra releases the musicians seem to play and perform a bit differently when backed with an orchestra, and I think for the better to give older material a fresh interpretation.

I do think Steve is reaching a saturation point of releasing these Genesis revisited shows(which I appreciate since he's only been on tour here once). Although he has mixed up the setlist over the years, hearing much of the Genesis catalog over and over, even for this Genesis fan is getting old.

The thing for me is that I have always found Genesis to be the most orchestral of the "big (insert your preferred number here)" in terms of forms, timbres, and approach. In watching the teaser I experienced no more goosebump factor than I do every time I watch videos of the band in their 70s heyday or for that matter video of Hackett's GR project. In my opinion the compositions themselves and the original instrumentation (and their contemporary analogs in the case of GR) produce an astounding amount of Orchestral Vibe, and the 40-piece orchestra is superfluous.

My opinion only! I'm glad for those who feel differently and hope that SH sells a ton of these.

My initial thought was that the orchestra added a bit of PBS Pledge Drive flavor to the show. I prefer the band all by its lonesome.

I never quite understand people wanting to limit what an artist puts up for sale. Why does it matter if you don't want to buy it?

I see it sort of like, I don't know...real life...when I go into a grocery store that has thousands of products, I don't suggest that they stock less. I simply buy what I want or need.

Has anyone expressed that in this thread? I don't see where, if anyone has.

Perhaps I read too much into rickawakeman's post quoted (by Topcat) above.
Apologies if i overestimated that element on this particular thread.

But here on PE we all frequently encounter that sentiment (of criticizing re-issues, re-mixes, new live versions of old standards, and other release strategies). It is a negative view that I just do not understand. Steve's output is often the whipping boy for that concept.

Again, if I am too sensitized to it I apologize.

This performance was circulated as a bootleg shortly after it happened, and the tracklist above is the complete thing - the second inclusion of "Afterglow" shouldn't be there, and indeed there is a numbering issue, but otherwise, it's all that was performed that night.

Have heard most all of these before on various live albums, I’m looking forward to SH having a different take on these with the orchestra. Some bands make a mess of things but I believe Hackett and company will be sensitive to the balance of the orchestra and the band.

I know what you mean - there are often people complaining on Marillion's FB groups and their forum that they release too many concert videos.

Too much of something can get a bit boring. Familiarity breeds contempt? I don't mean that harshly, I've been a big fan of Hackett's solo stuff & his Genesis works but really don't need any more so I'll pass on this.

I'll be picking this up for sure - I've enjoyed every one of these live releases. Looks like they are just releasing it in one format: 2CD + Blu-Ray digipak - that's perfect!

There is enough variation between them to keep me interested. Besides having the orchestra this will be the first live release with Jonas on bass. So that alone makes it worth getting.

I still say the ultimate capper to these Genesis Revisited shows would be a "Rutherford, Hackett and Banks" tour with the first half of the show solo highlights (Smallcreep's Day Suite, Island in the Darkness, Every Day, Spectral Mornings etc.) and the second half Genesis material. Mike and Tony probably have zero interest in doing this unfortunately. But the fans would love it and I think it would certainly be a huge success.

I'm definitely getting it. This sounds corny, but I like to support Steve in all is creative outputs.

I thought I'd adjust this to reflect reality.

Great posts above (JKL2000, Steve983, SRS, Mozo-pg, and Progatron). Thank you!

Like many of you, I often think back on the extended-Genesis family on what was, what might have been, and what might yet be. Of course, a common result of that way of thinking is frustration. Frustration at not getting participation by the remaining Genesis members. I always try to remember that these guys are free to do and say whatever they want but there certainly have been times when I wished they would just get together and do something. Anything.

Having just read the Phil Collins autobio, I was interested in how he described the other guys in general and in particular, how he described the meeting in his hotel room (2006 I believe) with Pete, Mike, Tony, and Steve about possibly touring The Lamb. His account seems to blame Peter and Steve. He mentions Pete's um and ahhing and for the third time in the book simply calls Steve "the dark one." Hmmm. Of course, he describes how once those two guys left the room the happy trio discussed their options. We got the 3 guys doing the 2007 reunion of course.

The talk comes up every so often, even again recently because Phil is touring. (When he brings up the possibility of touring with Peter he seems to see it as so restrictive...he says, "it would only be the old material...no 'Invisible Touch' or 'Misunderstanding'!" I laughed out loud at that one.) But yes, it seems unlikely that Mike and Tony would be up for a tour of the kind that SRS mentions. I sure would be interested in that. I feel that Steve would be up for it.

And that to me is the real take-home message. Steve has continued to remain active in the Studio, on the Stage, he plays on other people's records**, and in general, seems to be the model for how a progressive rock musician can make a living with music. He provides good gigs for lots of great musicians. I also admire that he seems to value input from musicians of other countries. His compositions have gotten a bit more adventurous. His guitar skills have remained excellent (so many of his solos give me chills). He seems to be trying to give Genesis fans what he perceives they want. And it seems important to him to change some of the elements of the older songs so that they fit his ideas.

Not every piece is a winner for me but I sure admire the guy. I too try and support him but there are many titles I have yet to purchase. As mentioned by someone above (about Jonas being on this recording), sometimes, the smaller changes (different players) or something relatively big (like the orchestra) make one say "no" or "yes" to a purchase.

It is amazing how some things stay the same. When Peter left and then when Steve left, many of us saw it as a mixed blessing. The band was no longer together but we did benefit from the additional solo releases. I pretty much feel the same today.

I am just glad many of these guys are still around.

**ah, an opportunity for me to again mention my favorite project, Robert Reed's Kompendium project...Steve's contributions are excellent.

Wolflight is the last Hackett album I bought. Just for fun, after several days of reading posts here, I put the cd on last night for my wife and I to listen to, and I must say at least for us, the album stands up very well after all the time that has passed since it was released.
It was played quite often and I thought at the time it was one of his best newer pieces, but then after perhaps playing it too much, I would grab the DVD and watch that instead.
There are elements on Wolflight that remind me of some of Steve's older material and I like that.

I would even say, after listening to it and having been away from it for awhile, it sounds even better to me today than when I first bought it.

I have got every Hackett box set of Steve Hackett, but by mistake, I dispose of one in my recycle bin thinking it was an empty box! Probably buy this one because of the orchestra. I prefer listening to his solo stuff than the Genesis material again. I would love to hear his latest solo album for a future live release.

    Indeed!
Hr. Hackett is well-spoken and he does cover the subject quite well.

Thank you for this portion of the interview!

Thanks for posting that, Calyx. It confirms much of what I've suspected/understood about the band and who sees what how.
