The Esoteric -its the more recent release and has been remastered and has extra sleeve notes, although the tracks are the same so on balance it looks the better version.

The Esoterics improve on the Virgins from the point of view of both bonus tracks (s/t has the rare Virgin "V" compilation medley, and "RC" restores the missing intro to "Halfway Between Heaven & Earth") and cover design (no ugly "WITH BONUS TRACKS"). I can't provide an expert comment on the sound, though.

Oh, and yes (updated after reading post above), Sid Smith's liners are a significant addition too !

Enjoy, Anthony! It's a fantastic album! Rotter's Club, and the first two National Health albums contain brilliant compositions and inspired performances.

What's the difference in terms of audio between the 2 editions ?

Honestly, to me its subtle, but the S/T seems a bit more "open", the highs and upper mid's seem to ring more, and the bass goes a tad deeper. Or I could be full of shit, but that's what my ears tell me I'm hearing. Plus the packaging is WAY better. I still have the old ones too - I'll never get rid of these albums. Best shit ever. I also have Rotters' on vinyl - just no turntable to spin it on

Buy both - its a great album, a classic, nothing like it anywhere.
I have the LP and the Esoteric CD.

You just don't get Richard Sinclair.
I'm holding out for the Wilson-mixed 5.1 super-duper walletbuster special anniversary extra adjectives edition.

Well actually I love Richards voice but personally I'm not mega keen on anything Canterbury that's very complex, in all honesty I prefer Caravan, Khan or Supersister who are kind of Canterbury in style, but that's just me , as I said, we have loads of label buyers who really love Egg, Hatfield, National Health etc.

Actually I'm kind of with you, which is why I much prefer Rotters Club to the first NH album. There's a better balance between the songs and the fusion-y stuff. Plus I think the proggier moments just kick butt.

The Virgin CD always drove me crazy because of the huge, abrupt level jump where "(Big) John Wayne..." transitions into "Chaos..." This is fixed on the Esoteric CD.

The Esoteric doesn't have any additional bonus tracks. It sounds okay, but the original Virgin/Caroline cd sounds better. Warm and lush.
