Music isn't about chops, or even about talent - it's about sound and the way that sound communicates to people. Mike Keneally
More sick guitarists now then ever before. My personal top 5 post 1980. No particular order. Of course I kept it to 5 and left off about 50 more I listen to regularly.

Off the top of my head, not yet mentioned:
Kim Thayil
Adam Jones

There seem to be a few guitarists listed that were on or released albums in the '70s (EVH, Steve Morse, Belew).
Randy Rhoads
Mike Johnson
Steve Rothery
Steve Vai
Buckethead
Luther Dickinson
Rich Robinson
Derek Trucks
Well, I see the point you're making, and I would agree with most of what you're suggesting, but wouldn't you agree that most of Belew's legacy was built post-70's? Other than his work with David Bowie, what did he do in the 70's that was notable? OK, he was Zappa's rhythm guitarist (and did that Bob Dylan impression on Flakes), but he didn't really get do "his thing" until The Sovereign tapped him for the Heroes tour.
Chris Poland (OHM)
Alex Machacek
Scott McGill
Ron Jarzombek (Spastic Ink)
Marcel Coenen (Suncaged)
Also not yet mentioned...
