Forgive my naivete. Did I miss where Collins did a bunch of suck drumming? I certainly can't recall it.

Phil Collins oh yes I've heard of him, he's the guy who sold multiple solo albums to those who, by looking at the cover, were expecting/interested in an old guy's voice only to find out the vocalist is only middle-aged, as well as sold a Motown covers album to those expecting/interested in a young energetic vocalist only to find out the vocalist is actually sort of an old guy, so I think he needs to talk to his record company more closely to get things right next time :-)))) Just kidding PC, you're great.
Phil with a guitar just doesn't look right (towards the end of this TV show). I've seen photos of him playing one, but this is the first video I think. Or at least, the first one that is supposed to be serious (i.e. not hamming it up like in the video for Invisible Touch). Drumming, singing, playing piano... I even saw him demonstrate the bagpipes once. But guitar just doesn't look right, somehow. I don't know why!

Phil Collins plays at least 2 instruments which include the drums and piano. He’s also a famous singer, and has some experience playing other instruments like the guitar. Collins is a true musical all-rounder. (taken from "Musical Mum").

I remember him playing around with a trumpet onstage - 'Genesis' (shapes) tour??

Wow, that must be an amazing website to boast such deep, extensive information.
Ahh yes, I recall that as well. And he squawks into the trumpet at the beginning of Do You Know, Do You Care on the Hello... album. I wonder what's next for him? Laying down some fat bass slap grooves? Donning a sparkly cape and surrounding himself with racks of synthesizers?
In all honesty, I feel like he's the type of guy who can probably pick up any instrument and make at least passable sounds on it within minutes. Or at least, back in the day he could. I don't know how well he can actually play the guitar; I believe on Both Sides he sampled himself playing it and then used the keyboard to actually play the melodies (like the intro to We Fly So Close for example). But in 50+ years as a touring musician, no doubt he had plenty of time to pick up bandmates' guitars and at least learn some basic chords and such. He's noodling around with Mike's double-neck way back in '74 in that photo from Headley Grange while they were making The Lamb.

I'm on a bit of Phil Collins kick right now...wow, what great music he did as a solo act.
Listened to Live Carousel Sunday, and it's still one of my favorite live shows.
I hear the Paris show is really good as well.

I was surprised when I heard he played all the instruments himself on 'Both Sides'...
I believe this is a built-in acoustic guitar preset of whatever synth he was using at the time. But he does play a few basic electric guitar power chords on Both Sides, like on We Wait and We Wonder.
I think he also played a bit of guitar on the Dance Into the Light album. I remember a video from one of the singles off that album (can't remember which one) where he was playing guitar and singing.
Yeah, I think you're right. That's how I feel too. He seems to have an innate musicality.
Agreed! Those first three studio albums Phil did are all excellent too, IMO. And there's still plenty of great songs he did in the years since, although the records overall don't reach the same heights for me as his early solo material does. "Colours" from But Seriously is a fantastic tune that I didn't really discover until somewhat recently, when I saw Yatte doing a "mini cover" of it.

As far as Phil's musicianship on instruments other than drums, I remember being amused when he said he played "Against All Odds" live on piano only twice and messed it up both times. It is in D flat, not especially easy to play.
Surprising to hear he's only played it twice on piano. I know one of those times would be the famous Live Aid, where he hits a bum note and visibly cringes.
So it turns out there was an official video for that song (It's In Your Eyes) where he's 'playing' the guitar - a Rickenbacker he borrowed from Paul McCartney! - but I'd never seen it until now. It doesn't really work IMO, because it seems meant to be taken seriously rather than being done with his usual humour. In retrospect, that Dance Into the Light period was an odd one for Phil. Album sales dropping (though probably still what other musicians would kill for), less radio play, a 'nice guy' image tarnished in the tabloid press, and now even occasional backlash from the new crowd (like those loudmouths from Oasis). Times had changed, I guess. He couldn't stay on top forever.

Re: righty / lefty:
There's also righty Eric Gales who, apart from holding the guitar like a lefty -- which is fairly common, not so unusual, only somewhat unusual -- has furthermore his high strings at the *top* of the neck. I don't think I had seen anyone do that. It's how he has learned to play. So, essentially he takes the guitar one'd expect a righty to play and flips it over to the other side without changing the original string order. In a video, the sound that was coming out of his guitar into my ears was getting higher and higher as his fingers moved upward (away from the ground) on the neck -- the first time I saw this sight I had to look twice to see what exactly was going on. Unusual to me for sure.
I know (and dig Phil's first three solo albums), but then I jumped ship. Are there any standout tracks on his albums from ...But Seriously and on? Cheers.
