    Bassoon in prog or RIO

Just been listening to I a Moon by North Sea Radio Orchestra... I like the sound of bassoon... apart from Gryphon,
any suggestions of prog or RIO with *lots* of bassoon ?

    Thanks

Hillage's Fish Rising (and by extension, Gong in that era, although I'm not 100% sure). Camel's Snow Goose I think has a bit, dunno about any of their other albums.

As you can tell, I haven't devoted a great deal of thought to this post.

Do you like Tangerine Dream's 'Zeit' album? And you like LOTS of bassoon? I truly love composer Michael Gordon's new album 'Rushes', a one-hour long piece for 'ambient' bassoons. You can find the piece performed on YouTube. I absolutely love it.

Univers Zero's first two come immediately to mind.

Lindsay Cooper played the bassoon on Fish Rising, but as far as I know she was never in Gong, and I don't think I've heard any bassoon on any of the Gong records.

Gryphon had a bassoon player, though that's obviously a different bag from "avant" or "RIO" or whatever silly label you want to put on the music.

On miRthkon's last album, Carolyn played bassoon (and clarinet) on my track "Osedax"

And it's only about 10 seconds in "Salmon Song" - great and very effective, but hard to call "FR" a "bassoon album".

Thanks for eassuring me... I thought I'd mixed the Gong discs and mistakenly inserted Gryphon or UZ ones in the sleeves

I love a Bassoon in rock music. You can do so much with it. The sound of it doubling the bass guitar over 'certain bits' is the greatest. All the above examples and of course Zappa.

I can't remember which bassoon player adapted a small wheel under the instrument tro make it more handy when playing seated...

Not sure if it's Berckmans (don't think so, because he's too much a purist to ever do that to an instrument)

    =============

that piece for 7 bassoons certainly gives an angle that I'd never heard to the instrument

Moulettes - Constellations (album) is filled with bassoon and all sorts of odd instruments. It also has quite a few prog connections as bassplayer Jim Mortimore is the son of Gentle Giant / Three Friends drummer Malcolm Mortimore and there is also a guest appearance by none other then Arthur Brown on the song Lady Vengeance:"

SHUT UP! IT'S THE BEST BASSOON ALBUM IN THE WORLD EVER. Sorry, I was high on Cake when I posted, and something had gone wrong with a specific area of my brain: http://youtu.be/_SyurgZ8GaQ?t=1m41s

There was a band from Philadelphia in the early 70s called Elizabeth. Saw them in '71 at college orientation. They were progish/fusion and had a bassoon player who played it on almost every number. They issued one album under the Elizabeth name and then a year or two later they issued an album under the name Good God. A long lost gem.

Looking forward to my day in court.

(snaps fingers) I was trying to remember the name of that band. I saw them play at the last 3RP and the Day Of Prog thing that was done the following year. The guitarist doubled on bassoon, playing both instruments through a pedalboard, and the keyboardist used I think both a Hammond and a Farfisa organ, along with a couple vintage synths.
