    Economy of expression

Anyone here have favorite examples of performances where the artist is readily identifiable despite minimal actual playing?

As an example, Jimmy Page's crystal-clear self-expression during the brief solo in "Sea of Love" by Plant/Honeydrippers...

...but my favorite example is Steve Howe in "The Last Time" on Asia's Aura album. Just a short series of single notes, yet the guitar part definitively proclaims "Howe!" even as it twists around Ian Crichton's parts.

Bill Frisell on more guest appearances than I can count. A real ensemble guy.

Ian Anderson walking onto stage carrying a flute & wearing a codpiece, he doesn't have to even play a single note!

Bruce Dickinson's scream and simultaneous high jump at every single gig combined with Steve Harris' chugging bassline aimed machine gun style at the audience.

    Guitar solo in 'Cinnamon Girl.'

You might want to mention Miles' silences around the Bitches Brew era.... His silences were almost more important than whatever few notes he did screech out from his trumpet's horns. And of course, whatever few notes he did belt out were soooooooo atrociously good that it more than made up for his long silences.

His moto was then: why play so many notes?? Just play the good ones

Minimalistic to an almost ridiculous degree (is there even more than one drum playing in the whole song?) and could be made by no one other than Faust.

Duke Ellington at the piano. Or Basie for that matter.

everything was said in 10 seconds, and she made it last 8 minutes

Thankfully that every 150 seconds there is a second KB giving a few notes

Two of my favorite minimalistic guitar players: Billy Gibbons and Bonnie Raitt. Not many notes, but a whole lot of vibe! And individualism.

You know after one (or two) notes that the guitar break in Badge isn't Clapton, and you also know that quickly who it is.

No one else sounds like Mark Knopfler.
