The second album 'Swim in the Wind' is not bad either, but doesnt have that extremely desperate mood as 'Lost at sea'.
Everybody should own the comiplation album 'Echoes 1975-1985' - contains both virgin albums + a lot of other great tracks.

Interesting what the second LP of the 2-LP re issue of 'Lost at sea' contains.

    Thx!

I'd recommend every newbie to start with an album of their own material, though - All My Friends or How Are We Doing and Who Will Tell Us?.

I don't see that the new Mew has been listed yet. Allmusic review says they are " bringing back some of the angular post-rock angst of earlier works like Frengers (2003) and And the Glass Handed Kites (2005). I really like what I'm hearing.

That new Mew album is fantastic, maybe their best since 'Frengers'?

Mike Vennart from Oceansize and Biffy Clyro just released "The Demon Joke" on Monday. The album is pretty sweet and in a lot of ways a continuation of Oceansize.

    Villagers: Darling Arithmetic

Lots of soft Mellotron-sounds on this singer-songwriter-album.

"Love Songs For Robots", the new album from Patrick Watson.

The title made me think of "Robots For Ronnie" from Crack The Sky's first album, but the music is totally different.

Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

I looked back a few months and could not find the new Breznev Fun Club mentioned, so therefore I proceed to do so forthwith, because I loved the earlier release so much:
    From: http://www.altrock.it/?p=899
“Il misantropo felice” is the second and long awaited release by “Breznev Fun Club”. The creative process of the project, conceived and directed by Rocco Lomonaco from Lucania, carries on and evolves. It’s a widened ensemble, a small rock-orchestra that leads us along a path made of complex atmospheres, sometimes dreamy or melancholic…a set of colors and sensations that make of BFC something unique. Strongly recommended for who loves the Canterbury sound, Zappa’s Uncle Meat, Bang on a can, Picchio dal Pozzo, Opus Avantra and Yugen and at same time a very recognizable and distinctive work, able to shape out its own space among the Avant-Prog and Canterbury scenes. On the composition: “The album “Il misantropo felice” was written mainly between 1999 and 2000 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The first theme of music was composed in 1997 and has been used as main pattern for other sections. A very small part was written later, in 2001. The orchestration went through several changes over time, the last of which between 2009 and 2010, has been the one used for the current recording. The composition consists of eight parts that, without being too descriptive, talks about the short and hypertrophic morning dream of a man, from the moment he falls asleep until his cathartic awakening. It is a Traumarbeit where the sounds unconsciously perceived by the outside world alternate themselves with private memories, and whose content becomes a dreamlike sound journey, at the end of which the reconciliation with the world is accomplished.”

I was listening to the new Breznev Fun Club last week. I haven't bought it yet but I probably will soon. I like it better than their debut. I liked the music well enough on the debut but found the vocals very irritating. Fortunately the new one seems to be more instrumental.

It's not at Wayside yet. I can't see paying postage from Italy so I will wait for it to arrive at Wayside. Same here about the vocals/speech/poetry/ whatever it was - the band calls "the poetical Sprechgesang of lyricist Franco Sciscio". The less Sprechgesang, the better Sprechgesang!

I've only got their Tzadik release from a few years back, and that's an insane one. I dunno if I even have the time to acquaint myself with anything new by them just yet. How does it compare? Are they still a two-guitars-plus-drummer trio?

Well, I only know the third album through the few samples on the bandcamp site, it looks to be in line with their second album which consisted of shorter tracks rather than the longer suite like pieces on the Tzadik. Same lineup, still crazy complicated, I prefer the first by a bit, but they are still an intruiging part of the newer crop of Japanese bands.

It has been a pretty good year for interesting math rock, with Upsilon Acrux, Ni, Sajjanu, and, according to their facebook, it looks like Ahleuchatistas have something percolating.
