    The original:

    The cover:

You could probably make a big list of French tunes mangled in English. “Seasons in the Sun” for one (and thank that hack Rod McKuen for that horrible “starfish on the beach” line), but “It Must Be Him” is arguably worse for turning the song into a lament by a pathetic woman who sits around by her phone (presumably with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s in her lap) waiting for her boyfriend to call.

Most versions of House of the Rising Sun, including that bloody thing by Frijid Pink. Still, as it's listed as "traditional", I suppose every recording, including the one by the Animals, is a cover.

Most covers of Macarthur Park, including Jimmy Webb's own version (not technically a cover I suppose). All other versions pale alongside Richard Harris.

Aretha Franklin, who I think is a fantastic singer, absolutely mangled Bob Lind's Elusive Butterfly, one of my favourite songs of all time. Lind, who is normally extremely generous in his praise for other artists who choose to cover his songs, simply said tactfully "Elusive Butterfly is not her song."

I'm sure to think of others.

I rather like Donna Summer's version.

It's OK for what it is, and I would probably say i like it if I hadn't heard the Harris original.

That Pink Floyd rendition is a piss-take, surely. What worries me is that I don't think those covers of Paint It Black and Mr Tambourine man were intended as piss-takes, they seem to be in earnest.

Yes' version of 'America' is a travesty. Takes a gorgeous song and tramples all over it.

Does it matter that this waste of time is what makes a life for you?

David Bowie has a few I'm really not fond of- 'God Only Knows' and 'Across The Universe' are particularly over-egged.

Yes, for me that 'slowed down, dragged out pop songs' schtick has not aged well and (mercifully) few bands seem to attempt that nowadays. By far the best thing they did was the nearly all original 'Renaissance' album.

Also, most of Fish's covers album and most of Bowie's covers album.

I agree. Maybe not the worst ever but overrated as all get out. I bought that eponymous album many years ago after reading nothing but drooling reviews here. I wanted to like it. I really wanted to like. I was disappointed that I didn't "get it." I felt inferior. The truth is, I just plain, don't like it. Those slow cover versions are awful. Maybe I should play it again. Honestly have no desire to. Those dirge like, slow versions and Bogert's vocals absolutely do nothing for me. My loss.
