    Plus

Richard Thompson, introduction to the studio version of 'The Calvary Cross'

Wilco / Nils Cline, 'Invisible Germany'

Others I can't think of at the moment...

Does it matter that this waste of time is what makes a life for you?

But you can still type; amazing!

Yeah, it's hard. It took me about 15 minutes to come up with my list yesterday and it'd probably be completely different if I made it today. Except for two solos that completely blew my mind on first listen and still hold up decades later; Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) (Hendrix) and Devil Take the Hindmost (Holdsworth).

    Yeah, it's just muscle memory.

But yes, coming up with a top ten in this would be so difficult. For me, it was Hendrix, Santana, Beck, Page (oddly enough, not Clapton) that got me first. Then DiMeola, McLaghlin, HOLDSWORTH, and of course Howe and Hackett, but there are SO many others that got me! Not even including the fact that there are more than one solo from those mentioned.

Throw in Blackmore (first 3 DP albums anyway) and Kath and it was exactly the same for me. I liked Clapton okay, but not as much.

Gary Moore - Shapes Of Things
    Gary Moore - Empty Rooms
Alan Morse - She Is Everything
    Ritchie Blackmore - Highway Star
    Alex Lifeson - Soliloquy
    Alex Lifeson - Freewill
David Gilmour - Anything from The Wall, pretty much.
Adrian Smith - Two Minutes To Midnight(I do believe it's just him on that one)
Vivian Campbell - Don't Talk To Strangers
John Petrucci - The Spirit Carries On

It's a list. As others have said, it could change at any moment. It's just what came up off the top o my head.

Was it Elliot Randall on "Don't Take Me Alive"?

Danny Toan on a song I don't remember the title of.

Indeed! I think much of Carlton's finest work was with SD.

Randall's big solo with them was on "Reelin' in the Years."

    Soooo many...

Here's a vote for Fripp's in "Sartori in Tangiers"...including the version I witnessed back at the pier in NYC in the 80's, on the 3oaPP tour.

Devil Take the Hindmost is absolutely in my top 5. Clapton's solo on the live version of Crossroads is iconic. Machine Gun, absolutely! Soooo many......

Never saw Crimso live but I'd put the version of Satori on the '84 King Crimson Live in Japan video in the top 10!

Although its dated sounding, Larry's first solo album imo has his best playing.

Same setup as Royal Scam....I love that ES335/Boogie tone.

I guess I'm a super geek, because the "guitar solo" is what got me into music in the first place.

I couldn't imagine classic tunes like Don't Fear the Reaper or Stairway To Heaven without the solos.

At one time, Jimmy Page proclaimed that his favorite guitar solo.

If you love his playing on that, you should hunt down a copy of "Mr. 335 Live In Japan". Incredible band:

    Engineer – Nobuo Ishizaki
Guitar [Electric], Vocals – Larry Carlton
    Keyboards – Greg Mathieson
    Percussion – Paulinho Da Costa
    Producer – Larry Carlton
