Thread: The drummers

    The drummers

In tonight's Two Lochs Radio "Many Facets of Prog" show, transmitted a few minutes after 10pm UK time and repeated same time on Friday, I will be focusing on the drummer projects. Featuring Nick D'Virgilo, Cozy Powell, Gavin Harrison, Phil Collins, Simon Phillips, Tony Williams, Chester Thompson, Bill Bruford and Billy Cobham. Drummers are often the butt of many musical jokes which is a bit unfair as they play a major part of creating exciting prog rock. Most drummer projects tend to be towards jazz-rock fusion.

    Hope you can listen in.

Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

Thanks for mentioning Michael Giles, IMO the first prog drummer. Bruford picked up when he moved on and well...the rest is history. Very nice to see Mike still improvising.

I know a lot of people dislike him, but I think Portnoy's a great drummer. The guy has the ability to throw in the kitchen sink WITHOUT losing the time, and listening to him in different situations, he actually plays appropriately for the music. Yeah, he's a bit wonky personally, but when I hear him play, it makes me want to go play my kit.

Portnoy is great... especially after seeing him live with Neal Morse! Totally excellent show

RE: Portnoy. The reason people pick on him is not for lack of skill;far from it. It's his complete and total arrogance and self-importance regarding his own skills.

Under-appreciated drummer/percussionist: Jode Leigh of England. His drumming is very colourful and he spices his playing with other percussion instruments at just the right time to complement the music. I was listening to "Midnight Madness" today, and his playing, and his use of tympani and vibes (among others) is just spot-on. He plays on the Time album, too, and his playing there is similarly inspired. It's just a shame we have so little recorded evidence of his playing (the only other album I can think of that he played on is that Greg Lake solo album nobody likes).
Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883...

    +1

One name I haven't seen mentioned is Keith Moon. I may lure the trolls out from under their bridges, but (imho) 'Moon the Loon' is the best drummer from the '60s (not to mention one of the all-time greats).
