    Favorite Live albums?

I searched for an existing thread but either I missed it or there isn't anything recent

IMO the greatest live album ever made is Joe Jackson's Big World, as unless you know the story behind it you'd think it was a perfectly crafted studio album. To my knowledge it is the only major release ever mixed *before* it was recorded.

Next would be Giant's Playing The Fool, aside from the aforementioned BW it may be the least overdubbed/filtered/edited live album ever, and Giant being Giant the arrangements are just sick.

Others (I will add some later, I absolutely cannot list them all from memory here) in no special order

Joni Mitchell - Shadows And Light
    Flairck: Live In Amsterdam
Yessongs (needs a SW remix) (also I would love to include the Yesshows version of Gates, my favorite Yes anything, ever)
    EL&P: WBMFTTSTNE)
    Genesis: Seconds Out
Tull, Bursting Out (with props to the live side of Living In The Past)
King Crimson: there's a lot of them but definitely need to include The Nightwatch
    Mike Keneally: Guitar Therapy
    Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense
Laurie Anderson: Home Of The Brave (esp. the movie)

Zappa is really hard to discern where live stops and studio starts. He was even known to paste tracks from completely different performances from different shows.

    Your turn. For now.

In addition to Tiny's choices that I've quoted, I'll add

Camel, A Live Record (with IMO the definitive 'Snow Goose')

    Marillion, Curtain Call Box Set

    Zappa, Wazoo

    and from non-prog

Dylan, Live 1966 and Live 1975

    CSNY, Four-Way Street

Springsteen, Hammersmith Odeon 1975 - which will have to do until some of the magnificent 1978 shows get an official release

Presleyl, That's the Way It Is

    Leon Russell, Leon Live

    The Band, Rock of Ages

Joe Cocker, Mad Dogs and Englishmen

Does it matter that this waste of time is what makes a life for you?

Elton John - Live In Australia

I am not normally a fan of live albums. In this case the accompaniment of the Melbourne Symphony orchestra adds an extra dimension to these songs, most of which were from very early in his career and sound almost as though they were written for orchestra. The orchestral arrangements make the listening experience really special, even though on this occasion his voice was crap.

Bob Lind - Live at the Luna Star Cafe

This guy is not exactly the most prolific producer of albums. He considers hi,mself much more comfortable as a live performer than in the recording studio, and this is worth having for the entertaining banter between the songs.

    Point of Order:

The whole subject of live albums gets a bit tricky.
For me a live album is an album of ONE concert recorded live in front of a paying audience with one song & inbetween chat leading into the next song on one night. Editing to shorten it is fine. But one concert in the right order, a paying audience = live album.

BUT there also exist, some abominations out there, that are ostensibly "live" but I don't consider them to be live albums:
    1. compilations of live performances from several or even every night of a band's tour
    2. compilations of live performances from throughout a band's career
    3. compilations of live studio performances: (i.e. the recording studio (in front of guests), radio studio (no audience present), TV studio, film studio, mixed in with live gig performances.

All 3 of the above are for me simply compilations not live albums. For example, for me, Yessongs is not a live album becasue it is a compilation of live performances off almost a year long tour, there is no real live feel or continuity.

If it's an album of recordings of live performances, then it's a live album. You might adopt a different definition, but I tend to go with the popular definition. If all the tracks are from recordings before a live audience, that tells me all I want or need to know. I expect the occasional intrusion of claps and yells from the audience, one or two bum notes or mistimed entries, a little banter between songs, etc., and I have to decide whether that is compensated for by my getting something special out of the recording that i don't get from a normal recording.

What next? Do we say an album is not "a studio album" because it was recorded in more than one studio?

The usual suspects...'Made In Japan', 'Live And Dangerous', 'Seconds Out', 'Roxy And Elsewhere'. 'Live/Dead' for 'Dark Star'.

Do you mean the 3-cd box which has the August 12, 1970 show? The original album is mostly a studio album (I think 3 or 4 songs are live). Great album, though!

With Elvis, I love the expanded Legacy release of 'On Stage' which also has 1969's 'Elvis In Person'- he's not rushing through the songs, and there's some great performances as extra tracks.

A "Favorites" list would probably vary depending on my mood, but here are a few that have been floating my boat lately...

    Eivind Aarset - Live Extracts
Prezens - slipped on a bar
Paolo Vinaccia - Very Much Alive

The vast majority of live albums do not fit these criteria.

When I found out that most live albums have studio overdubs on them to correct mistakes or enhance the recording, that's when I started collecting 'bootleg' recordings of concerts.

I listed a few examples above that weren't like this at all. In particular the Joe Jackson album was recorded directly to two tracks.
