As great as what's on the album is, it still rankles with me that not one of the 'official' CDs have included 'Supper's Ready', which was on the original double acetate. I get why the budget record didn't include it= they were still only a cult band at the time- but there's no excuse now.
Superb live album, but again I wish it was longer. Sometimes short live albums come across as rushed 'product'- was this in essence a contractual obligation, being the last album of their original run? But in fact it has a lot to offer.
Given the fact that the Pawn Hearts double LP was also scuttled around the same time, I'm guessing it was less a matter of them being a "cult" band so much as the fact Charisma didn't have the budget to put out double LP's. Course, VDGG were a "cult" band too, I guess. One wonders, had Lindisfarne (who apparently actually had a bona fide hit single at the time) planned a double LP, if Charisma would have allowed it to be released.
The thing about the double LP version of Genesis Live is, it strikes like it would have been awfully short. As I understand it, Supper's Ready was the one song recorded that was used, right? I guess if they had known they were recording a live album (the recording session was actually done for a King Biscuit broadcast) they could have theoretically included a few other tunes that were live favorites at the times, such as Stagnation or Twilight Alehouse (the latter would have been nice, since it never appeared on any of the regular albums).
But I suppose it's a moot point, for whichever reason, the whole idea of a double LP ended up being vetoed anyhow
Could be. Maybe not a contractual obligation (which I don't think a live album made up of already released songs would typically satisfy), but perhaps an effort by the record company to "milk the cow", just in case the hiatus ended up being a little more permanent.Superb live album, but again I wish it was longer. Sometimes short live albums come across as rushed 'product'- was this in essence a contractual obligation, being the last album of their original run? But in fact it has a lot to offer.
Viva's actually the one Roxy Music album I've never heard, as it's not in the boxset I have (which only covers the studio albums and singles).
