My World Cup preferences are based strictly on the cuisine of the nations playing. At this point, it is Viva Italia!

I blame Wynton, what was the question?

I understand that teams that lose early in the tournament aren't eliminated from the tourney. Does England pack up and go home now, or do they play again?

They get three games in the first stage then the top 2 in each group go forward into single elimination knockout. England need to beat Uruguay & Costa Rica in the next two games to advance.

So it's a best of three in the early round. If England loses one of the next two they pack it in and go home. Am I understanding that right?

They won't get out of the group with one win out of three. In theory they could even win the next two and go out. You could have three teams with 2 wins each (and one team with none) and it would come down to goal difference who goes through.

So for example, if England beat Uruguay 1-0 & Costa Rica 1-0, Costa Rica beat Italy 1-0 and Italy beat Uruguay 3-0 then England, Costa Rica & Italy would each have 6 points. England's Goal Difference would be +1, Italy +3, Costa Rica +2 and England would be out.

England could draw one of the two games and still go through as well.

Yes you get three points for a win and one point for a draw in the group stage. The teams are ranked based on points scored after three round robin games. The priority for deciding the standing in the group is:-

    1. Points
    2. Goal difference
    3. Goals scored
    4. Points in matches between tied teams
    5. Goal difference in matches between tied teams
    6. Goals scored in matches between tied teams
    7. Drawing of lots

We caught the Swiss match at brunch. Napped through the second half of the France game. Then watched most of Argentina.

Tomorrow will be a good day. Gotta remember to pace myself.

Great result for the USA but they'll need to play much better against Portugal, they'll need to hold the ball and pass the ball. But for now PARTY!!

You can't beat Gonorrhea, you can only hope to contain it.
