According to the bio at Voices in the Net, when he joined TD he "couldn't play keyboards all that well, but he had a knack for conjuring up very unusual sounds" and he was "a more intuitively trained artist" who "never had any musical lessons". Other sources claim that he's a classically-trained musician.
The only thing I don't like on Cyclone is the lyrics to Rising Runner Missed By Endless Sender. It just sounds like Joliffe improvised the vocal during a recording session, and didn't bother revising the words, etc. If I remember correctly, there's just one verse that he repeats several times.
But the rest of the album, including the vocals and lyrics on Bent Cold Sidewalk, I think are awesome. And his contribution on woodwinds are fantastic. I wish they could have kept going in that direction longer.
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

It isn't just Schmoelling's compositional prowess that has made the '80-'85 era my favorite of TD's the last three decades. Overall, the best synthesizer sounds TD employed were utilized by that line-up. Yeah, there was little to no Mellotron, but the Mellotron ain't a synth!
I don't know why Joliffe got the bum wrap because Bent Cold Sidewalk is an excellent track. Rising Runner is not a strong track. Madrigal Meridian which gets great praise is one that could use a little editing to make it a great track for me. Not enough development for the length of time.

I always like listening to the band members' solo output to glean what their contributions to the band were. If you have a chance to get Schmoelling's Wuivend Riet or White Out, they're worth the bucks. Franke's Pacific Coast Highway was a bit of a surprise to me in how melodic it is, but there are some gems on there, too. Baumann's first couple solo albums were good, but Repeat Repeat? Avoid avoid. Sounds like a bad impression of Gary Numan with a German accent.
And I'm guessing that "Krieger" is more or less an Anglicized spelling of how the ü sounds to an English-speaking ear. My German professor in college always said to form your mouth like a u but then say an e instead.
